By Miamia 2020-01-15

Honor, as a sub-brand of Huawei, officially unveiled its first 5G smartphone on November 26th, 2019: Honor V30 series - Honor V30 and Honor V30 Pro, both of which all support dual-mode 5G networks. Although those two phones are very similar in screen and appearance, but some key differences in hardware may make one a better option than the other. Let's have a look below.

The Honor V30 Pro only costs 200RMB more than the Honor V30 in 8+128GB variant, but you may know it's based on the hardware. Both phones are outstandingly well-built, with 6.57 inch double notch full-screen display and similar body sizes (the V30 Pro is 0.1mm thinner and 7g lighter than the V30). Both come in three same eye-catching colors for option (V30 offers one more color) and adopt same vertical array for the rear camera. To be frankly, it's hard to tell the difference from the appearance.

From the above chart, we can see that where the hardware starts to differ is mainly in processor, battery life and camera. Let me explain in detail.

In Processor:

Honor V30 Pro uses Kirin 990 5G processor, which integrates the 5G communication baseband to receive better performance in power consumption & heat generation. Honor V30 embraces Kirin 990 processor, which doesn't have 5G chips. So it needs to rely on the external baseband to achieve 5G functions. And then along comes with increasing power consumption. Thus, we can find out that Honor V30 owns a larger capacity battery. Furthermore, Kirin 990 5G processor is much better than Kirin 990 processor in terms of CPU frequency and NPU.

CPU: Kirin 990 5G is equipped with two 2.76GHz A76 big cores, two 2.36GHz A76 midcores, and four 1.95GHz A55 small cores. The big core of Kirin 990 has not changed, but the midcore frequency has dropped to 2.09GHz, and the small core has dropped to 1.86GH.

NPU: Kirin 990 5G version integrates two big cores and one small core, while Kirin 990 has a large core and a small core. In addition, the Kirin 990 5G uses a DaVinci-based NPU with a large core + micro core design. The official said that it has achieved a 24X improvement in AI energy efficiency.

In Battery Life:

Honor V30 boasts built-in 4200mAh battery, along with 40W super quick charge. And Honor V30 Pro is fitted with 4100mAh battery, supporting 40W super quick charge, 27W wireless charging and even reverse wireless charging.

As we've talked about above that the V30 Pro has a more power-efficient Kirin 990 5G CPU, so the battery life won't be worse than the V30. What's more, the former supports 27W wireless charging as well as reverse wireless charging. From this aspect, V30 Pro appears to edge out a bit than V30.

In Camera:

Both of them can take excellent selfies, aided by 32MP main camera and 8.0MP ultra wide angle camera. Additionally, they all feature three rear cameras. What differs is that Honor V30 possesses one 40MP main lens, one 8.0MP ultra wide angle lens and one 8.0MP telephoto lens. And only telephoto lens supports optical image stabilization.

In contrast, V30 Pro has one 40MP main lens, one 12MP film lens and one 8.0MP telephoto lens. And both main lens and telephoto lens support optical steady shot. Plus, 12MP independent film lens supports AI HDR+ that can provide wide dynamic range and more image details, and 5-Axis video intelligent image stabilization function, making it easy to shoot videos and movies, perfect for storytelling. Overall, you can pull off shots on the Honor V30 Pro that simply may not be possible on the Honor V30.

Purchase Guide

Regarding the price, both smartphones have two variants for users to choose from. Honor V30 costs 3299RMB for 6+128GB, and 3699RMB for 8+128GB; While Honor V30 Pro's 6+128GB version is sold at 3899RMB, 8+256RMB version at 4199RMB.

Ultimately, either phone is a great option for most prospective buyers, but the Honor V30 Pro is the better choice if photography is a top priority for you. You'll also benefit from things like multiple charging methods, faster charging speed and stronger playability. If the Honor V30 Pro is beyond your budget, the Honor V30 (6+128GB) is hardly a bad purchase.
