Pros: -Fits perfectly the camera body. It matches the color and shape of it. -Does what is supposed to do with the plus of using AA batteries to power up your camera. -It include a remote and to be honest, this remote works better that the original Nikon one (yes, that surprised me)

Cons: I think there are no cons, but it's true that other grips from another brands have more possibilities (LED display for example)

Other: Buy it if you need one! And if not, it's a great gift!

  • Works like a charm on my Nikon D90

posted by TranceCat on 08:45:19 G11T 16/11/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -Easy assembly -Good quality and construction -Product was recognized by my camera directly and functioned as it should

Cons: -The supplied AA Battery slide is slightly on the small side and holds the batteries in VERY tight. Most batteries are encased in a plastic wrapper with their brand and info on it. You may expect this to get damaged. The batteries themselves are in no danger and will only be held in place very tightly.

Other: Do not forget to set your camera settings to the correct battery type you are using, otherwise the camera might keep telling you that it's batteries are empty while they are not.

  • Malfunctioning unit

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Generally good build quality. Plastic body is solid, buttons aren't loose.

Cons: Build quality of the mechanism used to drive the fastening screw which attaches the unit to the camera, is very poor. It broke less than two weeks after purchase, and the unit cannot be attached to the camera any more. When it was attached, performance was erratic. Despite having entirely new and fully charged batteries, the battery level would sometimes show fully charged but most commonly suddenly show no charge, and the camera would not function, suggesting loose internal electrical contacts.

Other: All other models of Nikon compatible battery grip on Deal Extreme are based on the same base product as this one. I am particularly concerned by the poor quality of the screw mechanism, which is shared by all these grips, and I am wary of purchasing another grip from Deal Extreme since there is no guarantee it will not have the same electrical fault.

Pros: Works perfectly and very good looking. Its very cheap and the batteries has been detected by the dslr verry good. The package is very well and the remote shutter works fine.

Cons: The open system cover where are the batteries is very poor; the first lock I have do the system was broken. Now I have the grip with a separte cover. Check this aspect good in other grips because you can get desilusion by this thing and not is bad item

Other: I still have bad feelings for a good product due to the rupture opening system.

  • Good deal

Pros: - Very cheap comparing to original MB-D80 and its analogues
    - Good build quality (solid plastic)
    - Very useful IR remote

Cons: I found some bug when attach this grip to my D80. The camera indicated that its internal flash is turned on and fixed minimal shutter speed at 1/200 in manual mode (and at 1/60 in semi-automatic modes). I used original Nikon EN-EL3e battery and its AcmePower analog; and use of battery compartment with 6xAA-sized rechargeable batteries doesn't change the situation.
The solution, however, was found - I simply isolated one of the grip's pins (marked below as "x") and the grip started to function properly.
    [][][] . .
    x . . .
    . . . .
    . . . .
    [] - battery contacts
    . - grip pins
    x - isolated pin

Other: It's a musthave device for D80/D90 owners. The little bug I founded didn't change my overall excitement.

Pros: Great gear, works perfectly and very good looking. Outstanding price/value ratio. Fast and faultless delivery. Good packaging.

Cons: Instruction "manual" quality on the low side. Exemple: "can not be used with the rechargeable EN-EL3e batteries" this is exactly the battery provided by Nikon for the D90. Works fine with EN-EL3e anyway.
Another example: "move the switch to the L position" while there is no L position.

Other: Strongly recommended (both the product and DX)

  • Comfortable grip

    posted by dandman3039 on 08:13:17 G8T 04/08/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: Comfortable ergonomics
makes portrait photography much easier to frame up
rubber covering where your non index fingers grasp is better (more secure) than that on the actual nikon body, although it is only glued on.
easy access to the aperture and shutter dials built into the grip
    two times the battery capacity
gives active readouts of the different batteries current percentage
makes he camera look more expensive, like a D3
Much more balanced when larger lenses are attached
Much more confidence when holding the camera that I will not accidentally drop it.
Securely attaches to the camera with the mounting dial

Cons: couldn't get the included remote to work, but I already have an infrared intervalmeter with that function, so no loss for me.
The molding around the camera (How close it attaches to the body) is not perfect and can be seen that it is a separate piece of equipment up close.
The grip can be a little difficult to unscrew from the camera, but I would rather have it be secure to the camera than loose and falling off.
The part of the grip that goes inside the battery compartment of the camera, with the gold prongs, is not physically attached to the grip, other than through the internal wires. it slides on and off, so just make sure you don't pull on it and separate the internal wires from the contacts. However, as this part is non-load bearing, being inside the camera, this isn't a huge problem, just something to watch out for.
The aperture dial on the front quit working on me after about 10 days, DX is currently shipping me a replacement so A+ for customer service, even when it is from the other side of the world.

Other: This grip is well worth the money for its ergonomics, handling, battery capacity, and visual appeal.
I hope that the failing of the aperture dial is not a common occurrence and my replacement is in good quality. I will update this review if there is anything wrong with my replacement.

  • Best buy for the price!!

Pros: Wonderful material, solid construction. feels and locks perfectly.Good instructions. wonder why would people spend almost 2 x this amount for something similar and quite obviously from the same country of manufacturer or probably the same factory!

Cons: icky shutter button. needs to be depressed without force at a certain angle. master that and you'll be shooting like a sub machine gun.

Other: Would get another in a heartbeat. the amount i saved from not buying the original gets me 2 pieces here! No worries about breaking it (i mean its built like a tank and your camera is probably more precious) and easily replaceable.
