  • Great Flashlight at a decent price

posted by faileas on 08:51:07 G4T 29/04/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Bright at full brightness, battery lasts for quite a while in low brightness (which is enough for most things). Compact, and pretty inexpensive. Can light up a reasonably priced room tailsitting.

Cons: Uses rechargable batteries, so picking up alkalines for an emergency is not an option. Battery lasts pretty long, so short of an actual disaster, getting a battery and a spare should handle things. I've gotten a few dings on the flashlight from dropping it.

Other: Its in my pocket or my bedside almost all the time. Its one hell of a useful bit of kit.

  • really good l2 host

Pros: - killer toy, actually that good, made a really good impression on all my colleagues, - very easy to mod - my best light so far - small enough for edc

Cons: none here, as it folows: - pill lose -> put some good old paper on the battery - get's warm on hight -> put some copper sheet around the drop-in, some thermal paste near the led - not a great thrower -> please!, I ordered an aspherical lens from dx and this thing leaves you in the dark in broad daylight from 5 m away

Other: very good light, still have all the time on my belt.

  • The best flashlight for night cycling (WF504B)

posted by Avengerx on 07:31:53 G4T 26/04/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: - Great, white light
    - The beam is well wide, differently from other models like 502B which are narrower
    - You can use the 'low' mode to go around the lit places at night (example on the city), signalling where you are yet saving battery time and not obfuscating others' sight (specially car drivers)

Cons: - In HIGH mode (strongest light) it heats up very high (not an issue while you are riding your bicycle as wind blows constantly)
    - 90% of the cases (if not 100%) for this item require you to do modifications on the back cap to get rid of failing contacts (usually by soldering a copper wire around the switch's contacts)
    - The strap came with the plastic joint broken, so I had to superglue it back in one place. Anyway for biking I do not use the strap (used it on my mobile phone tough).

Other: If I were to buy another of this, I would buy the same. As an -possible- alternative that might have a wider beam (have not tested yet), I would consider buying the AK-T60 XML-T6. Although a bit stronger, if the beam is too wide, it would not get as far as the 504B angle.

  • Great general purpose flashlight

posted by GraemeEvans on 16:17:18 G10T 30/10/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Standard construction, 6P compatible body.
Very bright, possibly actually as bright as stated.
    Mode memory works well.
Low is actually low, which is very useful for use in close up, like reading a watch, map or finding your way indoors.
No PWM flickering in low modes

Cons: Strobe and SOS modes are distracting, and I hope never to need either. Would prefer not to have them.
It's a shame it won't run on 2 dry primary (no rechargeable) cells, but that's not an issue for me.

Other: For general purpose use, including both a really high top end and a properly low bottom end brightness this is quite excellent. Seems quite well built.

    Pros: +about 450 to 500 lumens
+18650 protected cells fit nice :)
+Brightest light you can get for the money as of this review.
+5 modes allows for strobing friends and long runtime
+build quality is pretty good (threads are nice)
+reliable so far, best light i own actually (besides hs-802)
+floods a lot of light :)!! a wall of lumens that stretches fart!!! (lol)
+p60 makes swapping to lesser led possible, but xml 5-mode makes doing so dumb (efficiency is great on low) but its still nice
+have left it on all night on low with plenty of battery left
+really, much brighter than expected when compared to r2 or q5, which run at same current (almost 3 times as bright maybe)
+uses just over one amp on high (1.1 to 1.2 at tail) so runtime is great! ~2hrs even on high
+great for camping, seems water resistant (used in rain 5 or 6 times and works great still)
+fits pretty comfortably in the pocket

Cons: +not a great thrower, but just as good as any other p60 I've tried
-turbo instead of sos would be nice, 3A? Whoah!
-warms up quite a bit, had to add foil and heat-sink compound to head to avoid damage to the bad@$$ led
-too bright to point at friends without them getting upset :)
-low is pretty bright still, but thats just because the led is super efficient (150+ lumens at 350ma)

Other: BUY THIS! If you want to make sure you don't damage the led, use aluminum foil and heat-sinking compound around the drop-in to take up air space between it and the flashlight body. It should last years if used with sense even without foil. I live in a place where temps regularly go above 100f, so if you live in a colder area, you probably wont encounter the heat problem i did
sorry for that "fart" typo teeheehee

  • UltraFire On The Cheap Is Great!

posted by zippyzappy on 15:59:51 G4T 16/04/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I am very pleased with the color output. I was expecting greenish or something awful for the price. Greatly surprised! It has intense lumen ability. It plain smokes my $54 P3D-Q5 and all my older generation hand held LED lights except for my Magic Shine bike lights because of power source. Floody with a good hot spot. Small enough to fit in my pocket. Screw down bezel 'look' is cool. Solid with good machine threads and o-rings. Won't roll-off-the-table design.

Cons: Next are the drawbacks to this light: 1) The 'pill' is loose, loose, loose. 1a) Fix by disassembling the pill from the reflector. Then apply thermal epoxy on pill threads and inside of reflector base. Tighten it all up and first issue solved. 2) The reflector OD is .0125 inches smaller that the barrel of the light body. This air space causes poor heat transfer. 2a) Fix by wrapping with copper tape or aluminum and use a small dab of heat sink compound when re-installing. 3) The light body and the female threaded head are not one piece! They are 2 separate pieces glued together very nicely. You can only see this from looking down from the top to the light where the two parts join. Not a big deal but a really hot light may cause this glue to fail. So don't let the light get too hot. 4) Not regulated. 4a) Watch out to not overly discharge your Li-ion batteries. 5) The strap is so small it will only fit a small to medium hand.

Other: Really bright light. This new CREE is intense. I own a bunch of LED lights and this is a decent light out of the box. Especially when the heat transfer issues are resolved. It can be used without any of these fixes though. If you don't, only run for 2-3 minutes at a time for fear of smoking the XM-LT6 LED. If you are planning on using this as a bike light, it is not the best choice. It has the wrong beam pattern, IMO. Being left on unattended may cause a really short life too. Putting it in your pocket for night walks, great choice. Work use, pretty good choice. When hunting monsters, great choice. Grunion running, great choice. Blinding the crap out of someone, perfect choice.

  • My first 18650 flashlight.

posted by ckaidi on 19:15:02 G4T 13/04/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -I think its very bright.
    -Can tail stand.
-Good build quality look and feel soild
-Fit well with sku.31871 for bicycle mounting.

Cons: sku.20392 that I bought with need to be squeezed in. And in fact it damaged the outside sticker of the batt that I need to removed the whole sticker. Now my batt is naked.
The head of the torch get hot very fast. I not sure its good anot.

Other: Not sure of the heat issues, if not this might be a good buy for this price although can be lower. I chose this WF504B body as its suppose to be more soild as I dont mind it to be more heavy.
Also not sure if most batt will fit better rather than the sku.20392.

  • Very bright light, nicely built!

    posted by Lion251 on 02:58:56 G4T 12/04/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This light has the build quality that I've come to expect from the WF-504B. I had already ordered several with either XRE-R2 and XPG-R5, this is the first XML-T6.
Sturdy, nice finish, even lubricated O-rings.
Very much impressed with the amount of light!

Cons: This light appears to be direct-driven.
When you have a battery that sags in voltage only a little, you may overdrive even the XML LED.
With an older grey Trustfire battery, tail cap current is 2,5A, which is OK for the XM-L.
If you know this, it is not much of a problem.

    Other: Unbeatable for the price!
