  • TSOP1838 IR Infrared Receiver

posted by ksenchy on 14:33:16 G5T 22/05/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This IR receiver is made for receiving signals with the modulation frequency of 38kHz. It has a built in demodulator, so you don't really have to worry about that. Anyway it works on higher frequency as well, but the BER is a bit higher. I use it together with SKU: 173930 to expand my STM32F4 Discovery Board, which has only one button, now it has 18 on 1 pin! :)

Cons: The additional board with LED that signals whether it has received a signal make it relatively expensive.

Other: It's a really useful product worth buying.

  • Good item, works as expected, buy lots!

Pros: Sensitive, works well, has indicator lamps (visible) so you know the IR is getting received. Fits nicely into standard pin spaced boards or breadboard

Cons: Sensor at strange angle. Sensitive area is crosshatched by metal (although this doesnt seem to affect sensitivity)

Other: Good price (similar to what I can purchase just the pin diode for from local outlets)

  • Well worth getting the break-out board!

Pros: Inexpensive, good packaging, responsive. Works out of the box with Arduino libraries. It actually has a little LED that lights up when it receives a signal which is a nice feature to see it working.

Cons: It needs to be bent upward to expose the full sensor, as it ships bent down facing the break-out board.

Other: I'm very happy with this and I will certainly buy more.

Pros: It works very well, and is much cheaper than in other stores.

Cons: The pins are not properly marked, this once made me burn one of these. For my testing, it does not have a really good range with precision.

Other: Very good for hobbyists that need a cheap solution wireless controllers, since the radio frequency transmitter/receivers are very expensive.

  • Nice sensor

posted by meanblackbike on 04:24:21 G11T 16/11/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: It receives the signals from many IR remote controllers. And makes Arduino understand it. There is a blue simd LED that blinks for the IR signals received - that makes very easy to see that it works.

Cons: Before connect the power leads check the white painted S and minus signs so you get + in the middle. This is not con more like a warning: You must provide stable 5V power supply to receive the right signals there is a sku on dx.com for that, use it.

Other: This is a sensor with a blue LED on die and easy to assemble leads so no soldering. Also works well with many IR rc. Buy it will never regret it. Get more then one in case you overheat some by misplacing the + and - like I did. The + i actually not marked and it is in the middle. Use magnifying lens if you cannot see the marks for the leads.

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: As advertised, it works with Arduino well to receive an IR signal. The PCB board is welcome since I has an integrated LED and you don't need to plug in resistors and such. Great value, and none of the hassle!

Cons: I'm not sure if I just had bad luck, but after 2 days of being used, it started struggling with picking up a signal. According to the onboard LED, there was some sort of noise going on, even though I turned off all lamps and possible sources of IR noise in the room. I am requesting a new one from DX. Excellent customer service, I'm sure I'll get a new one

Other: Purchase this one over other IR receivers that don't have the PCB board. Definitely saves you a bit of trouble.

  • Good IR module for DIY

posted by enigmawings on 20:25:53 G11T 08/11/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Works like a charm with any IR remote, the range seems to vary a bit between 15-20 meters, which is great for the price. The soldering is neat and seems solid. Easy to just stick into a breadboard and wire up to Arduino and similar, and your project has a wireless interface, and you can use almost any remote out there.

Cons: As with many other modules or electronic DIY products on DX, there is no datasheet. Maybe not necessary for this one as it is almost as simple as it can get, but it's still something I think DX should try and provide.

Other: Fast and easy IR capability on a neat board that'll plug into your breadboard just as easily as you mount it on any surface you wish, and provided cheap here on DX :)

  • excellent!

posted by bokorn on 00:55:58 G9T 29/09/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - excellent build quality - builtin status led! - very easy to use

Cons: - the position of the receiver sensor is quite weird... when it arrived, the receiver was partly covered by the PCB. This shouldn't be a problem (especially because you can bend the sensor to a different position), but if the pins were 1 or 2 mm longer, I wouldn't have to write this...

Other: if you need an IR receiver, grab this one!

  • TSOP1838 IR Infrared Receiver

posted by aZZika on 03:59:16 G9T 22/09/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: The unit is a TSOP 1838 infra-red remote control receiver tuned for 38kHz operation. It operates from 2.7V – 5.5V DC supply, with a nominal range of 18m.

Cons: It is useful for receiving consumer remote control IR signals. Such as Television remote control and some Cellular phones.

Other: I bought it for Arduino and it's management. I'm currently making a project that Arduino with this IR Receiver reads values from TV remote control and displays it on LCD display and it works like a charm.
