  • Be careful with the rain

Pros: - It looks cool - It worked for more than one year - it has 2 light color, blue and orange (the original has only one color)

Cons: - The light lasts only 3 or 4 hours, even if you charge the battery on eletric power using a battery charger. - It is a little hard to open/close, but that´s a thing you won´t do very much. - It broke after a strong rain storm that flooded the inner circuits and rusted the wires.

Other: I am going to buy another one, as it is very cool and it took more than one year in the sun/rain to break.

Pros: Very pretty. Very easy to use. It is waterproof (works on rain). It still works after almost a year. Very decorative, but I should have bought a pair, it would be prettier.

Cons: Light is very low. It only works on absolute darkness: moon and street lights may cause light to go off. I solved by putting a piece of paper right over the light sensor). It lasts only 1 or 2 hours. The metallic seal rusts off if exposed to rain.

Other: Beautiful decoration. It could have a better solar charger and batteries. I recharged the battery separetely on eletric power, and it lasted for 5 hours only.

  • Still working fine.

Pros: I expected this thing to break down after a few weeks but its been sitting next to my bed for over 7 months now and still working just fine. It gives a nice blueish glow when the lights go off which allows me to see in the dark when I have to go to the toilet etc. Its build quality on the outside looks cool. I requested to add bubble plastic to it and it came to me perfectly in-tact.

Cons: The price is high but not to high, I wanted to buy this thing in my own country (the Netherlands) but the cheapest website I could find it on was way more expensive then DX. No other cons really.

  • Great concept, fatally flawed execution.

Pros: Emits a nice, relaxing blue or amber light at night. Very easy to use: set the switch to your favourite colour (orange/sun or blue/moon), put it in the sunlight for it to charge and forget about it. Looks like a regular jar during the day. The glass is good quality and the plastic diffuser spreads light evenly, so it looks like the whole jar is emitting light, not just an atomically bright LED dangling from the lid.

Cons: Terrible build quality. The innards look like they were put together by a fourth grader. First off, one of the wires came unsoldered. Of course, this means the jar was dead on arrival. The battery compartment is attached with paper tape and hot glue, and that came apart as well. The switch, which is used to turn the jar on or off, was not soldered properly. As I was inspecting the rest of the PCB, two other wires detached from their solder points on the PCB. The no-name 1.2v 600mAh Ni-Cad battery wouldn't hold a charge after 3 days in the sunlight. The solar panel works like a charm and delivers approximately 6.5v of power (there's a resistor on the PCB to bring that measure down, of course). The jar was dirty (there was sand and dirt inside of the jar from the sanding process, which gives the glass that frosted look). There was also plastic-like glue on the rubber seal around the lid.

Other: All in all, it took approximately 2 hours to solder, resolder, glue and repair everything (ironically, using tools that I had previously bought from DX). Since the included battery was defective, I replaced it with a Rayovac branded Li-ion 1.2v 1200mAh rechargeable AA battery, which works like a charm. This is not for your lambda user. The product is very cheaply made (the electronic portion, at least) and you'll be lucky if you catch a working unit out of the box. My recommendation? Build one yourself. There are some excellent tutorials on the internet and the materials can be found right here on DX. That way, you can be assured that your very own Sun Jar will go through some form of quality control.
