  • Clever device but defective Li battery inside

posted by Stratocruser on 05:36:45 G7T 29/07/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Very compact, the charge controller inside is VERY sophisticated, not just a linear voltage regulator.

Cons: My Li battery inside started swelling up after a few months and lifted the top right off the device. BAAAAD! Didnt leak though...

Other: I will rip out an 1800 MAH Li cell from a closeout obsolete cell phone battery sale item form Radio Shack and install it. Shouldnt have to do this but I refuse to scrap any fixable electronics, thats REAL GREEN practice, not buying something with an organic cotton carrrying case.

Pros: I use it to charge my mp3 and my cellular phone when I go on a trip to the mountain. In the mountain you haven’t power points. It’s very light and the plastic cover is very strong.

Cons: The charge is low but it isn’t really a problem if you think in the price of this item.
The great problem is the connection. The product have one cable with one connection USB (Ok, perfect), and one connection specific of the battery. If you lost the cable, you can´t use the battery never ever.
The product hasn’t instructions, but you can find it in the post.

Other: Perfect relationship between quality and price

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: It does what it's meant for, at a very cheap price.
    Easy to disassemble.
    Easy to use.
The green led brightness depends on the light the panel gets, so you'll easily understand when the panel is charging and when it is not.

Cons: Well, actually I've found many cons. First of all, it takes a very very long time to recharge if not hit by direct sunlight. I left it at daylight for more than a week to have it charged enough to bring my cellphone from 66% to 100%. This also makes me unconfident with the battery true capacity. Second, the connector is not a standard mini-USB. This means that if the supplied cable gets damaged or lost, you'll need to disasseble and sold yourself the connector you want. Third, the lights turn on as soon as you connect the cable, even if no load is connected. This is a useless battery consumption. Finally, the construction is poor and the leds can be confusing (the green led lights when the panel is hit by sunlight, while the red one lights when the battery is in use or is charging via USB).

Other: Writing about defects is always easier than writing about virtues. This cheap panel does what it's meant for so it is not a bad product. My defect listing has purpose to let you understand what you must NOT expect from this object, since the description ad Deal Extreme matches perfectly what the object is meant to.

Pros: --> Very small, smaller than I thought
-->, good for carrying around and using as a emergency battery for mobile phones, ipods, mp3 players, digitalcameras etc.
--> it's solar powered, so you have free electricity!
--> it may be recharged by the usb of pc when there is no sun laying around
    --> Lithium batteries, veeeeeery good
--> it outputs 5,45V which is way good!

Cons: --> Very small, solar panel could bebigger for faster recharging and batteries could be way bigger, like 4Ah at least
--> lights are very hard to understand, I really didn't understand then, really tried hard but i don't really know what's happening. When i's on the sun the green light is strong. and thats all.
--> It shouldn't have leds, or they shouldn't stay on all the time, if the solar panel can give 130mah only the led consume 10 at least
--> the cable of my output had the wires inverted so it wasn't chargin anything, had to cut the wire and resolder. its only 2 wires, a red and one black.
    -->

Other: Good, buy one if you have lots of usb things.

Pros: it's very light and compact. thinner than a deck of cards, about as big around as a standard postcard. battery capacity on a unit of this size isn't extraordinary but was good enough to maintain usage of my cell phone away from a charger. you can either charge it via sunlight or by the included usb cable.

Cons: the green light (which comes on to show full charge when plugged in) stays on when charging in sunlight, so know way of knowing when it's fully charged up by light.

Other: handy for keeping your small devices running if you got some sunshine around or a laptop or USB adaptor handy

  • Great product

    posted by Crog48 on 10:47:41 G3T 31/03/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Contains a Lithium battery so once its charged it should stay charged for a short while. Capacity seems good and charges well in direct sunlight. Checked the output and supplies a very constant 5.45 volts which is perfect for charging any USB powered devices and is extremely useful on a sunny holiday abroad for charging your phone or iPods.

Cons: As with all solar panels you need a proper amount of sunlight to get a charge. Works pretty well when there is the sun through. The Charge LEDs are confusing when using the solar charging as there is no light to indicate a full charge ans the green light stays on.

Other: Get this if you need a power backup and you don't have access to a power point or just want to be green and use renewable energies :)

  • Pretty handy portable battery pack!

    posted by Tummy57 on 12:46:15 G2T 16/02/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: You can use this as a portable battery pack, to charge anything that can be charged by regular USB power. It's also, of course, rechargeable by solar power, so you get "free" power for your devices!

Cons: It seems to take a pretty long time to recharge the battery using just the solar power. Mind you, it's not been sunny, so it's hard to tell exactly how long it will take to charge. The manual only comes in Chinese, so it's hard to understand what the different light combinations are.

Other: I like this unit. It'll be great as an add on portable battery pack, with the capability to recharge with solar power. Definitely glad to have purchased this. I wish the solar charging capabilities were better, but for the price, I can't complain. I also wish there was an english manual.

Pros: Very compact and light. Completely self contained and versatile! You can charge anything USB off of it. And ofcourse it only uses he sun for power!

Cons: Can't be charged from an external source. Very difficult to use because the lights are not intuitive and they also don't let you know when either the internal battery, or the thing you are charging is charged. The battery capacity doesn't seem to be as high as they claim.

Other: Very handy, especially paired with a universal USB cable set. Needs better capacity. Saves the environment!

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Very light and compact. VERY versatile due to the USB interface. Uses clean solar energy. Can be used as an emergency power pack for using your phone/pda/mp3 player etc.

Cons: Does not indicate when the battery is fully charged or not charged. Does not indicate when it is done charging whatever you plug into it. Is not really possible to charge the internal battery externally other than the solar array because of how it is built.

Other: For the price and a 2000mah battery you can't go wrong compared to how much the other similar units are priced, but if you want it to be a bit more user friendly in terms of knowing when the battery is charged or when it's charged your appliance, or some versatility in accessories, maybe you should sacrifice some storage capacity for that. Otherwise it's great!
