  • Needs work, but can be a great light.

Pros: Side clicky- hard to find good side clickies. Decent machine work- smooth edges and clean threads. Uses C cell batteries that are easy to find and cheap. Not glued- easy to modify. Reflector is designed for flood, not throw. Great for work indoors, or fairly close up. Lights up the whole room, not just a spot. Has a wide, bright spill and a very smooth transition from the hot spot to the fill. The beam is very similar to the VB-16 lights, DX part 2392, and 9741. I have both the Cree version and the SSC version of the VB-16 and the only difference between the two is a slight color tint difference and the Cree version has a very slight ring around the hot spot common to Cree lights. The VB-16 lights are very much brighter than the stock M-504C.

Cons: In stock form this light was too dim, one of the weakest lights I owned. Mine must have been sitting on the shelf a long time, the o-rings were dried out and split. Very poor plastic lens. The lens on mine is rippled and causes noticeable distortion to the light beam. Reflector is designed for flood, not throw. I actually prefer this design, but if you want an outdoor light to see long distance, you won't like this one. Very bad assembly of electronics. Mine had intermittent contacts and LED was installed on wrong side of heatsink- the heatsink is recessed on one side for LED, but they put the heatsink in upside down and just screwed the LED to it anyway.

Other: If you really like side clickies and have the skills to upgrade this light, you will end up with a great light. If you just want a great light with a bright, wide spill and a smooth transition between the hot spot and spill, get a VB-16. The VB-16 is smaller and much better built, but requires CR123A or 18650 batteries.

  • Good mid range search light with very good runtim

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Three modes. 85, 60, and 40 (approx)lumens. Four C-Cell batteries for great runtime. Lighter (less heavy) than my 2C mag-light. Very good side spill with non-overpowering hot spot. Cree Led. Easily modded with plenty of room to spare. OP Reflector for smoother beam. Very white semi warm tint. Very good grip Reflector is held on by an actual ring nut (good). Supports NI-MHs.

Cons: Could be brighter for a flashlight on 6vdc. Certain brands of alkaline batteries are a bit loose in the barrel. Looks like Type 1 or better anodizing on the barrel. The aluminum head is coated in thick durable plastic (Pro or Con?). Plastic outer lens. Switch is a tad annoying as it's a simple electronic depress cap type of switch. Not regualted except for resistance via the mode switching. Otherwise direct drive.

Other: I would recomend this as a good replacement for a mag-lite.
