Pros: Super fun dongle to play with. Great to experiment with SDR and such a great price. These are a fantastic way to get introduced to software defined radio.

    Cons: None

Other: I have no idea how well it works for TV. We don't have that kinda signals here. Don't expect it work as well has real SDR hardware that costs alot more. But fantastic for what it is.

  • Works with linux and rtl-sdr

posted by vitecek on 12:24:18 G10T 23/10/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Works on linux (I just had to compile a module for kernel, it's well described on many webpages). VLC is able to play tv or radio using this dongle in quite good quality Supported by rtl-sdr project, you can use it as an inexpensive sdr radio (works from 24MHz to 1766MHz) It's quite cheap

Cons: It isn't very sensitive, but it wasn't supposed to use it as sdr, so it's not a big con. It tells the computer it's RTL2838, which could cause a troubles on Linux, the kernel doesn't have driver for it included yet, so you have to download and compile it yourself, but it takes only few minutes.

Other: If you want a cheap dvb-t receiver or sdr radio, this is the right choice.

  • Perfect for ADS-B aircraft tracking !

    posted by Horsy69 on 03:45:15 G9T 29/09/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Although I did not have the opportunity yo test this USB DVB-T receiver in a TV mode, it works perfectly for ADS-B aircraft tracking, which is what I bought it for.

Cons: The manufacture is a bit cheap and the antanna connector extremely fragile (already dismanteled once, but was able to clip it again after opening the case).

Other: Very good value for money for this specific usage for sure.

  • Descent for SDR

posted by warweed on 19:55:05 G9T 07/09/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is a really cheap entry level tuner that can be used for software defined radio its easily modifyed doesn't get to hot and works well with SDRsharp

Cons: The antenna it comes with is pretty garbage trying to pick up some local fm stations was just impossible

Other: You have 2 options you can get the MCX to coax adapter here for a few bucks or you can do what i did which is to desolder the mcx connector on the board and i simply solders a male to male coax connector to the board from the bottom of the board and then i used some cheap like 10 dollar bunny ears from radio shack and it works AWESOME now

  • Cheap and good 'software-defined radio' receiver

posted by Wildscliss on 02:01:28 G9T 05/09/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I'm using this DVB-T tuner as software-defined radio receiver for 54-1720 MHz wide band. Tested with SDRSharp, ADSBSharp, RTL1090 software under Windows 7 x64. Under Linux (Fedora 19 x32), tested wirh Osmocom RTL-SDR software (rtl_tcp, rtl_fm, ...). Tuner works very well, moderately heated.

Cons: Included antenna practically unusable. Even FM radio doesn't received qualitatively (I'm live in city area). Buying TV coaxial - MCX connector adapter (i.e. SKU 207418) to connect better antenna.

Other: Thank to DealExtreme for good shipment of good tuner :-)

  • Cheap SDR receiver with RTL2832U and R820T tuner

    posted by j45p3r on 14:06:37 G8T 28/08/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Cheap. Contains the proper RTL2832U ADC and R820T tuner that you need for RTL-SDR and SDR#. Includes a simple antenna and is reasonably well-built. Includes a small IR remote for the TV functions, battery included.

Cons: Included antenna is small and not very useful for extended frequency ranges. The connector is small and you'll need a convertor to connect COAX. Software for the original use (DVB-T) is simple but probably adequate (haven't tried it much).

Other: Buy it if you want to play with SDR. Contains the right ADC and tuner for large frequency range. For proper receptions you'll want to buy/make an antenna appropriate for your use.

  • A good choice for SDR use

posted by dreamlayers on 10:25:35 G7T 23/07/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Can be used as a software defined radio. Receives low frequencies which E4000 tuner cannot. Decent reception with included antenna Compatible with GNU Radio, SDR#, HDSDR, and more. Antenna may be unscrewed from base, which lets you connect a different antenna.

Cons: Non-standard antenna connector. Gets quite hot, though that hasn't caused any problems. Images of FM broadcast band appear at other frequencies.

Other: This is a good choice for software defined radio use.

  • Great for SDR

posted by mcergun on 06:34:21 G6T 25/06/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I got this gadget for ADS-B receiving and it does the job very well. But keep in mind i live close to an airport so sensivity is not a big issue for me. You may need to buy a better antenna and an adaptor for it to work better.

Cons: The antenna is pretty weak and the connector could be a more common one. I m gonna order an adaptor for using better antennas. Also the device heats up like crazy after sime usage (like 10mins), I don't know if it will harm the device or not.

Other: Definitely a buy for this cheap price. Works great for Software Defined Radio

  • Perfect for SDR experimenting

Pros: - So cheeeeeeaaaap ! - Perfect for experimenting SDR (install Zadig + SDRsharp) - You can use it to watch TV too !

Cons: - Antenna connector is not at a easily findable standard . - Standard Antenna is very cheap and its bandwith make it useable only for DVB and FM radio frequencies.

Other: - Very fun product to experiment SDR. - You should definitly foressee some DIY antenna according to the frequency you want to scan. That's part of the fun too !
