  • Good starter unit for SDR.

posted by ackthhpt on 19:00:30 G6T 18/06/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Works with RTL-SDR software once you figure out how to set it up.

Cons: Antenna is worthless. Antenna connector is below-par. I removed the connector and soldered a coax directly to the board and got much better reception. Sensitivity is a bit low and there's no input protection on the antenna input. Adding a pre-amp and protection diodes are on mu list of things to do.

Other: It works and is good enough to play with SDR.

Pros: Works with SDR easy to setup even on first time user works great good sample rates and recives just about everything i needed right out of the box remote control works fine not a white box item

Cons: Needs a good antenna to get better reception signals, buts works. I will try with an external antenna to find better results.

Other: This stick doesn not have tuner Elonics E4000, but tuner Fitipower FC0013

  • Works fine as SDR hardware

posted by cpanek on 16:04:25 G2T 10/02/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: works fine with SDR#, tunes down into HF spectrum. Have received FM broadcast, police and amateur narrow band FM, and Aircraft AM on it. RF gain is adjustable from -9 dB to +19.7 dB.

Cons: Only goes up to 862 MHz.

Other: Works well as hardware for software defined radio. Can't beat the price.

  • Cheap SDR dongle

posted by cellkyborg on 07:43:47 G12T 27/12/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: +It is very cheap compared to ordinary radio receivers +Has a relatively wide range +Easy to use for both SDR and regular TV/FM listening purposes

Cons: -Antenna is almost useless -Does not have ESD protection -Stronger signals generates second harmonics

Other: In general it is a good and cheap broad range SDR receiver, but a better equipment is needed for advanced tasks.

  • Nice product for TV and SDR

    posted by csilva1975 on 03:55:45 G11T 21/11/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Does what it’s supposed to do. You can watch television and listen to FM radio (DAB is not available in my country). Just install software, plug in and watch TV. The drivers for this device are BDA so you can use any software that is compatible (VLC, etc). It comes with a handy remote (battery included) that works great. The main reason that I bought this device, was to use as an SDR. In the first tests that I did, I picked up some amateur chatting. The SNR is not so great, but my external antenna is also not that great. The drivers don’t seem to be compatible, so you cannot use it to watch TV and SDR.

Cons: As expected, provided antenna does not provide sufficient signal for indoor TV operation. Use roof or external antenna. Works ok for FM.

Other: You get your money's worth. Recommended.

  • good product for tv and sdr

    posted by andreas1ab on 13:38:22 G11T 19/11/2012 certificated customer

Pros: Comfortable, stuck up and running. It is easy to configure. TV and SDR will work without problems. Good catches radio. Use SDR Sharp to listen to other frequencies. Good price for the product.

Cons: If E4000 chip is no longer produced, it is best to look for a device on a chip R820. Although the device works without problems. Chip a little noisy, but it's only for the SDR.

Other: This device is worth the money. Everything works without problems. You can buy.

  • A good device

posted by DylanLuhowy on 09:24:45 G11T 19/11/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Good sensitivity. I’m able to pick up aviation band voice transmissions and decode ACARS at up to 350 km distance. Economical.

Cons: Case is cheap. It came open spontaneously, althogh easy to clip back together. The one I received had a Fitipower FC0013 tuner. This works very well from about 50 MHz to 950 MHz, but does not have the range of the E4000 tuner. I’m not able to receive ADS-B transmissions on 1090 MHz, so I’ve purchased another dongle with the R820T for that purpose. It has a PAL connector, so you’ll need an adapter to use F-type or other typical connectors used in North America.

Other: In general a good device to use as an introduction to Software Defined Radio, just be aware it may not be able to pick up anything above 950 MHz or so.

  • Usefull as a SDR!

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I bought this not for watching TV but to use at as a SDR, since it contains the Elonics E4000 receiver chip. Works fine with the rtlsdr driver and I am using with SDR#, HDSDR and all the other compatible Software.

Cons: Not really a con, but since I have not looked at the circuit yet, I am not sure if it has an overvoltage protection diode on the antenna input.

Other: If you are not lucky to find a suitable USB-Device on ebay, get this one...

  • Good SDR radio, bad TV receiver

posted by slePP on 18:59:11 G10T 15/10/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I picked one of these up with the dual purpose of a wideband radio receiver using RTL-SDR, which it works very well for. The SNR is a bit high, but that's to be expected for something like this. I also wanted to use it when I wasn't playing with radios for television, but have yet to actually get it to show any channels at all in my area (I have 5 channels nearby). The included software is, for once, not bad.

Cons: The antenna connector isn't all that easy to find if you wanted to attach some other antenna. The included antenna is really optimized for the higher frequency stuff and won't do well for the VHF channels. Included software won't let you add manual frequency entries for channels, it will only scan to find them (which doesn't work with weak signals).

Other: If you want to try our SDR, grab one. For actual TV watching, perhaps look around, or find a better antenna.

  • Decent product

posted by objeturg on 18:25:16 G9T 23/09/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Not overheating. Cheap price, good chipset.

Cons: Build quality seems to be not the best i have seen around here. USB connector is soldered and/or made of such a soft material that you'll have to be extremely careful when handling and using this stick. Even small cable movement will bend this connector easily! Stick's case is badly designed and don't support USB connector almost not at all, so all the pressure goes to soldering part.

Other: Drivers under Linux compile without the problems, but Linux driver still seems to be totally buggy. I was able to find only 1 MUX of 3 using Linux drivers. Under Windows 7 tuner did found all the three without any problems and signal is strong enough in my area, so can't really blame poor reception here.
