  • Good geological compass for students - with modifications

    posted by Jering2009 on 10:50:08 G3T 03/03/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Has a clinometer. I add a bubble level, so it'll do accurate strike and dip readings after it's modded. Got the idea after seeing some modified Suuntos in Europe, except this is MUCH cheaper.

Cons: Sticks in wet weather. And the dial doesn't provide enough purchase to turn it when it dows. I'm going to see if I can fix this - silicone oil, perhaps? The OTHER big con is not the compass, it's DX. They don't keep this in constant stock - if you need a large number, or even a few for your classmates, order six months in advance (I'm NOT kidding). It does need a bubble level added to it for accurate strike measurements.

Other: IF you know where to get bubble levels, and if you can solve the sticking problem, it'd make a nice geo compass. A Brunton is much better, though, but a lot more expensive. Save up for one, use this in the meantime.

  • Cheap Compass

posted by ZacMcKracken on 08:38:54 G1T 12/01/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - it works - it is filled with some liquid (lets hope its oil) - has a mechanism to meassure how steep somesthing is - has a ruler for maps in the scale 1:50000 to measure distances - you can turn the ring on the top to adjust the declenation - built in mirror - cord to hang arround your neck

Cons: build quality is not the best can be collapsed, but the lock is weak hinge is weak too you cant take bearings of landmarks to identify your location (or i dont know how)

Other: You should buy it its cheap and it works. I bought two, one as a present for my sister who went on a hiking trip, so she will not loose the track. I dont know what the mirror is good for. you can use it to shave yourself in the wild or perhaps to send light signals to someone...Mac Gyver Style!

  • Excelent compass

posted by geofisica on 13:24:32 G10T 05/10/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Excellent compass, carcase in resistant acrylic mirror, good quality (comes with a protective film). The adjustment of declination is sufficiently accurate for most uses in the field, if you do not need exact measurements. The accuracy of the angles is consistent with the use of guidance. This measure allows tnato measures direct and indirect (referred to by the mirror).

Cons: The inclinometer is a little hard and difficult to control, over time they get the hang of. The magnetic needle takes a while to re-orient, but hardly crashes.

Other: A great compass for most everyday situations it is perfect for those who do not want to spend and need a very good equipment.

  • Great Compass!

posted by mrninja on 11:29:51 G9T 22/09/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -Has a mirror (Can be used as a signal also)
    -Liquid damped compass
    -A clinometer
    -Rotating bezel ring
-When folded out you an use it as 1:50000km/mm ruler, map reading
    -A luminous direction point.

Cons: -No line in the middle of the mirror? (DX could you add one please?)
    - Wished it came with a better lanyard? Using my safety release whistle lanyard atm.

Other: Buy it before it goes out of stock! This is a great lightweight compass. It might not as rugged as the US military compass, or a $100 top of the line Suunto. For $4 buy one and give it a try? Do it! Do it now!

  • Not bad

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is an actual working mirror compass (not lensatic like the title claims), not some weird mirror/lensatic compass combination like sku 6720 which doesn't work as either.
Compared it with my pro grade compass and it's pretty accurate.
It also comes an inclinometer, which you don't tend to find on cheap compass.

Cons: The bezel is very hard to turn so needs two hand to work, although some silicone lube fixed it immediately.
The mirror lacks a center line for accurate sighting, thou you can fix that with a knife.
There are several molded markings for alignment with said line, but not filled with color paint for easy visibility, thou a dab of while paint works.

Other: Recommended for any beginners who want to try a mirror compass but doesn't want to spend much.

  • Ok for the price

    Pros: - The price
    - The compass and the device for measuring the angle works well. Perfect for measuring the angle of slopes when considering the risk of avalanches in the winter.

Cons: - The hinges was broken when I got it, but for the price I did not bother to complain since it works. Tried to glue it but it came off again.

Pros: - Great price and it does look pretty good as well.
    - mirror looks sharp
    - can hang around your neck
    - Great if you use km's as measurements.

Cons: - The hinges are weak.
    - neck rope could be make with stronger material

Other: Decent compass as long as nothing is broken.

  • Excellent mirror compass

posted by desolder on 18:47:30 G7T 14/07/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is a mirror compass, not a lensatic compass. I prefer this type since it is more accurate.
    -
The compass body is clear so you can align it with a map underneath.
    -
The compass inclues a built in clinometer, perfect for measuring vertical angles.
    -
A previous compass I bought from DX had a misaligned hinge. This one is perfectly aligned.
    -
    You can't beat the price.

Cons: The ruler is in metric only.
    -
There is no adjustment for magnetic declination like on my Silva Ranger, but hey it doesn't cost as much as a Ranger either.
    -
Doesn't seem fluid damped, but the needle seems to settle quickly anyway.

Other: This is a good mirror compass at a terrific price.
