  • Good radio, BAD USB cable

    posted by charon79m on 12:16:07 G5T 28/05/2010 certificated customer

Pros: Great little radio setup, I've found it to be much better than the built-in Intel radio in my laptops.
I only use this under Linux, so I can not comment on how well it works in Windows. Ubuntu finds it w/out issue and I manage it using the Gnome-Network-Manager.

Cons: USB Cable that shipped with one of these devices, I purchased two, was formed wrong at pin-1. This damaged the USB ports on my laptop. MAJOR ISSUE!
Fortunately the USB cable that cam with it is easily replaced, but that doesn't fix my ports.
I've had issues with getting this radio to stay connected to WEP encrypted networks. I don't use WEP for my network, nor do I suggest others use it, so it's not an issue I've spent any time troubleshooting.

Other: If I were to consider purchasing this again, I would definitely purchase; though, I would more closely inspect the product for defects.

  • Very good value wifi adapter

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: The best USB wifi adapter I have ever used! I really dont know what the bad reviews and dodgy pictures are about I've taken a picture of my unit and its a legit Realtek 8187L chipset.
R-SMA connector so you can use a better antenna.
Works with out of the box with 2.6.32-22-generic linux kernals and newer. Works with out of the box with backtrack 4 and packet injection. Haven't tried with windows so cant say.
    Build quality is good too!

Cons: supplied CDs are not english software but they are not required if using a recent linux distro.

Other: Best 802.11 b/g High Power Wireless USB Adapter for the money that supports packet injection and linux

Pros: - 2-3 bars better signal according to windows
    - easy to install

Cons: - No Windows 7 drivers bundled.

Other: Great adapter with less that 15 quid. Buy this for just in case if you ever use your laptop outside of your home.

  • Not 8187L Chipset, doesn't work

posted by datahaunt on 21:23:08 G5T 05/05/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: None. This unit is incompatible with any flavor of Windows. Drivers direct from RealTek do not support this unit.

Cons: This is supposed to have a 8187L chipset. It doesn't. It contains a 8225 chipset and even then, the drivers form RealTek do not support it on any Windows OS.

    Other: Avoid.

posted by ElRodri on 06:49:20 G2T 23/02/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: It has a lot of quality in all aspects, has very good coverage, I get maximum signal from my AP and Backtrack 3 detects more than 100 BP, very Powerfull compared with others of my adapters. Compatible with Windows 7 64-bit.

Cons: No cons, as it works perfectly and has a great quality / price. Very good product!

Other: Quality / price is to give it a 10 out of 10! Good work DX! I recommend your purchase!
