Pros: Works as advertised... which is to say, better than I thought. I'm using this with an Asus Transformer Prime TF-201 tablet which has a useless built in GPS receiver. I used the Holux with the tablet along with the "Bluetooth GPS" app available in the Google Play store. I then placed the Holux on the dashboard of my car and gave it a whirl. It works great. I get 10 or more satellite locks in a negligible amount of time (few seconds?). There hasn't been any Android app that I've tried that doesn't work with this configuration. I use it for the following apps without issue: - Sygic (offline / no wifi) - Locus Pro (offline / no wifi) - Ulysse Speedometer Pro (offline / no wifi) - Google Maps (online for map downloads) I'm no GPS genious so my terminology might be wrong when I say that the "sampling rate" is fast enough to have a very usable GPS based speedometer in my car. It updates fast and GPS apps work without jitters or lag.

Cons: I had to go online to find the paring code "0000"

Other: Great buy. My tablet is now twice as useful as it was before.

  • Excellent bluetooth GPS device

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: + Costs less than other retail devices + One of the few GPS bluetooth devices still on the market + Quick position fix and 2D fix is fairly accurate + Charge lasts for a fairly long time + Battery is user replaceable.

Cons: - Limited compared to several integrated GPS systems in new phones - no WAAS, - 3D fix is often highly inaccurate

Other: If you're looking to spend less than $100 to have an off-device GPS solution that is as accurate as a non-WAAS or A/GPS device could be, then this is one of the few options left. + Recommended

  • Very nice for the price

Pros: Very small, about the size of a match box. Light weight too. Easy to use after quickly reading the manual. The EzTour software works really well and seems to even get updates every now and then. Removable battery is a very good feature also.

Cons: Flimsy on/off switch. The plastic used in the casing is pretty weak also so be careful with it.

Other: My only concern is how long this device will last. So far everything seems good but I've only had it for a couple of months.

  • Works well for orienteering

Pros: I've used it for analysis of my course in orienteering, a sport where one runs in the forest with a detailed map. It works well for this purpose. Even in dense forest, reception is adequate, and it can easily show where I slowed down or made a mistake. It seems to have a fair battery time. It also works well with gpsbabel on Linux, using the m241 protocol.

Cons: It should be a way to not start a new track if you connect it and turn it on to read out.

Other: It works well for my purpose, is small and nice for running. I would certainly recommend it to other orienteers who want a cheap logger-only GPS.

  • Good but a little buggy GPSr

Pros: + Most of the time acquires a fix in less than a minute. If you use the device often and don't move too far away, gets a fix even quicker. + Accurate (when it works) + Sensitive + Despite the power switch location, I've never accidentally turned the device off. + Almost 200 hours of logging with default settings (at 12 samples per second). + Very good battery life for its size. With BT on, I can easily get 12 hours and almost double with BT turned off. + Spare batteries are abundant and fairly cheap.

Cons: - If you haven't used the device for a while, try to acquire a fix in completely different place and haven't uploaded AGPS data, you may end up waiting for a fix for ten minutes even in open sky condition. - Although the battery is good, fresh AAs would have been /much/ easier to get on the field. - Sometimes location data is off by tens of meters. This seldom happens, but when it does, it seems to be purely random. Power cycling solves the problem and you're back on the map in just a few seconds. - Although it is possible to log by time, speed or distance, I haven't found a way to save these settings to NVRAM.

Other: Better device than I expected, even with its flaws.

  • Good GPS receiver

Pros: Very small, compact, good build quality. Drivers and software works well and of a good standard. Battery is compatible with many Nokia phones including mine. Very accurate!!! It is able to work with very weak GPS signal, even indoors. Battery longs ~20 hours! Can be used as a external GPS with a notebook, tablet PC, phone. Quickly finds and lock on GPS sattelites.

Cons: Price! It should be better. Bundled software is a little bit buggy. Had to update the firmware and the software in order to get it working.

Other: Price should be better. Anyway it is a great product.

Pros: Logs correctly. Drivers and software work well and of a good standard. Battery is compatible with many Nokia phones including mine. Works well as a USB-serial device and Bluetooth-serial device. Standard mini-B USB connection.

Cons: Would be better with timed Bluetooth discovery instead of always being in discovery mode. Occasionally loses satellite lock indoors but my Sat Nav does the same at the same locations.

Other: The 'cons' are minor. This is a good product with good support from the manufacturer's page.

  • iPhone users - read this

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: + Very accurate for my driving and running purposes. + Easy to pair (code 0000). + Easy to use (really no brainer as it should be). + Battery seems to last, but my experience is limited to one day (arrived yesterday). + Replaceable battery. + USB and Car power cables + packaging (if you care...)

Cons: - manual in Chinese - no straightforward connection with Apple devices (tried only with iPhone 3GS so far). - Build could be stronger: it's just ok. - Size/weight (I know, it's on the specs, but could be lighter and smaller)

Other: A little expensive, but when pairing with your mobile phone or tablet quickly pays off.

Pros: Very useful thing to log movements of a person/vehicle/object. Can be used as a external gps antenna with a notebook, tablet pc, phone. Quickly finds and lock on GPS satellites, reception is quite strong, compared to internal antennas in other devices.

Cons: Bundled software is buggy and useless, you have to polish this thing a bit to make it work flawlessly!

Other: Great portable Bluetooth GPS logger, well built and nicely priced.

  • Great Little Unit

posted by iggie on 06:23:03 G6T 14/06/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This GPS works very well it even tracks under bridges and around tall buildings. It locks onto satelites quickly. The battery seems to last forever even with the bluetooth connected.I was impressed by the actual size of the unit it fits in a shirt pocket and out of the way. Software is easy to use but not always so accurate. Holux support replied right away when contacted about a connection issue.

Cons: Software had some misses when geotagging pictures using log files, found a way around this using other software or using BT for direct geotagging. Unit could have had a waypoint button.

    Other: Well worth the price.
