  • Excellent single-cell headlamp

posted by DrewdQueue on 23:23:44 G4T 07/04/2013 certificated customer

Pros: Single AA battery required - much more power than coin cells or AAAs. Single double-throw switch (OFF and ON, no tiddly 'modes') Good sized headband, fits my 62cm/24.5" boofhead straight out of the box Incredibly lightweight compared to competitors with similar perforamance No wires on headband to get caught or worn out Lamp holder has nice 'sticky', not 'slick' feel - doesn't move around of forehead and light holds angle position fairly well Comes in a cute nylon zippered belt-bag for storage or carrying.

Cons: Focussing assembly is a little rough in action, and has a short 'throw'. Light spread seems quite uneven, with multiple rings present, does the job fine though. Although the O-ring style attachment works well, vigorous exertion like running, rock-climbing, etc will probably knock the lens out of position. Worked fine walking around, but may wear loose over time.

Other: Possibly a little overpriced considering what you get, but is the best light for what you do get. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a simple, on/off head lamp as a light-weight travel alternative to a full-on headlamp, or as backup.

  • Goog light but very narrow

    posted by p4trykx on 17:33:33 G1T 02/01/2013 certificated customer

Pros: This light accepts AA batteries as well as Li-ion 14500 cells, small and bright.

Cons: Very narrow beam really which is in my opinion a deal breaker. You can use a additional diffuser which helps but without it's not good for illuminating close objects.

Other: I think there is another one on DX with slightly longer lens housing which has wider beam. SKU: 100350

  • Good headlamp for amateur use.

Pros: No external wires. Seems to be waterproof. Small size.

Cons: Optics is useful only if you are in tent, or other very small closed place. No reflector, when focused to maximal distance - shows emitter square. 1 fully charged AA Soshine 2700 from dx gets drained after 3 hours of use. Gets hot when used.

Other: If there would be fixes for this with better optics, and longer battery life I would buy one.

  • An excellent lamp for close work

    posted by Pluto10 on 12:16:28 G2T 17/02/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I bought this because it's one of only a very few headlamps that will work from single AA
battery. That feature alone is a huge plus for me .
I do alot of close up electrical and electronics work and so I wanted something that would run for a long time on AA size NiMh rechargables and this with it's two modes of high and low is perfect .I have found that the low setting is bright enough for close up wiring/soldering work .
It also has a usefull simple beam focus function which is very easily changed by just sliding the front lens in and out.
Also it comes with a nice little storage case
you can clip on a belt.

Cons: The only negative thing I can think of with this is the way it is gripped in the headband by only two rubber rings ,which I imagine if you kept adjusting the aim of the lamp wouldn't last long before they wore out and no longer gripped the lamp effectively.
One other thing I can think of that possibly could be a concern is the way half of the torch body is used to carry positive polarity (usually the torch body carries the negative polarity so it is the same as the battery casing). This means if the usually thin battery casing insulation is scratched or defective it would possibly touch the torch casing which is positive and short out the battery.

Other: Very Good head lamp for close up work ,I am very pleased with my purchase .

  • Lightweight universal light

posted by Zapunidi on 02:10:35 G10T 04/10/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: 1) Lightweight. Only one AA battery and little optics.
    2) Works with NiMH accumulator, Alkaline AA battery, Li-Ion accumulator and even can work work with AAA battery but inside contact fails sometimes.
    3) Built-in stabilizer that draws all energy from the power source and shuts down completely after that instead of continuesly dimming as the battery goes down.
    4) Has two levels of light intesity and hardly useful blinking light. Intensity is lower by high frequency strobe (about 100 Hz) so no power is lost as in simple resister load regulators.
    5) Has a focusing ability
    6) Light angle can be adjusted from "into the sky" to "right on the nose" position.

Cons: 1) Focusing is adjusted between laser-like beam and slightly wider beam. No flood light.
    2) Optics is the most dissapointing part here. Some light is just lost in transfer from the LED to out lens. For example the most narrow beam don't give much better intensity as it loose more light than "flood" light adjustment.
    3) The light goes up and down when walking a little bit as its fixation is rather primitive. Not a big con though.

Other: This light is electronically superior to other simple battery-resistor-LED lights. The internal DCDC step-up regulator brings in many features and simplicity of use. The optics is a clear drawback. If only the out lens could be placed closer to the LED a better flood light and efficiency would be archieved. So DX, hurry up and invent another lightweight light like this one with better optics.

  • I like it

posted by Slowbore on 10:23:30 G8T 29/08/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: I really like this light. It's very bright but is dimmable with a half click. What I like most about it is the way it's built. The rubber straps that hold the light to the band is a great idea. It's very robust, holds its position and I don't worry about it breaking. I have taken this on many camping trips now and generally really like it. I'm using it with the lion battery and it lasts a long time.

Cons: There are a few cons however: - Reading from this light while perfectly possible is not optimal. Would be better if the beam could get just a bit wider. - When the lion batter dies it dies NOW with no warning. I think I might start taping a spare to the strap or something.

Other: If you like lion powered lights, this one is simple and effective.

  • Better price for this kind of light

posted by Kasatkin on 02:48:37 G8T 25/08/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - Best price aluminium headlight with Cree - The lamp can be inclined to needed direction, even up or down - It is lightweight because of single AA battery - It is leakproof - Pouch included

Cons: The only one serious cons was - pouch had small spike on it's corner. I even scratched my hand a little. I removed spike using scissors without problem.

Other: I looked for single AA with perpendicular beam light so long time. There are some other choices, including UltraFire UF-H2. But all of them are too much expensive. I was very surprised when found this item. Only $13.3 for the aluminium Cre light and with carry pouch! I bought several. And I'm satisfied.

  • Good for occasional usage, but not much

posted by fdaniel on 03:29:53 G3T 03/03/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: + Not very expensive + Uses a single AA battery + Comes with a pouch + Focusable beam + Side switch is easily accessible

Cons: - Beam is not very floody, even at the largest setting - When you focus too much the center has a square pattern, you can even distinct the shape of the emitter (3 segments, probably a XP-E) - The headband doesn't maintain very well the flashlight, when you're static it's ok, but if you walk or run it'll be prone to bounce up and down - Blueish tint

Other: There's not much choice on DX for single AA headlamps. This one could have been a good one, alas the beam is not very pleasant, and the stability of the body will be a problem in most situations.

  • Worth it

Pros: Nice light weight headlamp. Sits in a bag well with other gear without getting tied up. Works great on a 14500. Low mode is still bright enough for most work. Light weight means you don't really notice it on your head. Nice carry bag.

Cons: At first it seemed faulty, would turn on and off. Once I screwed the lens part on better it was perfect. Lens beam is very tight even on flood.

Other: It was cheap enough for an impulse buy and good enough for me to be happy with it.
