  • Good for small projects

    posted by zer00 on 22:39:55 G5T 21/05/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Cheap and easy to use with existing libraries after identifying the id's (0x1E for the compass and 0x53 for the accelerometer)

Cons: I ordered 2. One of them was broken. Already filled out RMA. Hoping to get answer soon. Other than that, no problems.

Other: Nice combination for small projects. Takes some skill, but most things can be googled. I only use it with I2c and that works perfectly.

  • Good Basic Navigation Board

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: 3 axis compass as well as accelerometer on a single board with a simple I2C interface. Easy to interface with Arduino - library code is available if you google for the chip numbers. 3 axis sensitivity allows you to mount it in any orientation.

Cons: Interrupt pins from the accelerometer are not broken out so you can't make use of its advanced functions. PCB layout does not follow chip maker's recommendations for compass chip, so may be subject to interference. Compass is only accurate to +-2 degrees.

Other: A usable module for basic navigation. DRY pin on board is the Data Ready pin on the compass chip.

  • Works as it should

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is a nice board with a 3-axis accelerometer, ADXL345, and 3-axis magnetic field sensor, HMC5883L. The board has has a 3.3V regulator so it can be powered from 5V and interfaced directly to a 5V microcontroller. It does what it is supposed to do.

Cons: There is no documentation whatsoever. The interrupt pins of the ADXL345 are not broken out, and only the I2C interface is made available.

Other: Good value for a simple board to access these two chips. The sensors themselves are not exactly plug and play though - calibration is required before they are useful.
