Pros: I get about 10 channels over the air in the Ottawa area.

Cons: Didn't like the software that came with it and had a hard time finding a program that worked well with it. I ended using WatchHDTV which is hard to find but works great for me. Supplied antenna is weak.

Other: Paying extra for TV is silly, you already watch the commercials and pay taxes. Why should you have to pay an additional fee for cable or satellite when the only advantage they have is a bunch of channels you won't watch anyhow.

  • Works in windows, not in Linux

Pros: It works in Windows 7, and apparently finds drivers automatically, so no worries about needing the included CD.

Cons: It gets hot. Not burn yourself or smoke hot, but still quite warm. It draws more power than the USB spec says it should, which can cause issues on some laptops. It doesn't work under linux. It doesn't work in VirtualBox using USB passthrough (hey, it was worth a shot!)

Other: If you use Windows7 or WMC this is a great little device. If you want something to use in Linux, look else where.

  • great tuner

Pros: got crystal clear HD and SD channels, easy to use. Since my windows media player refuses to work, I used the bundled software, it works! Easy to set up, and am getting ~25 channels (hooked up to a large 4 bay antenna)

Cons: the included antenna is pretty crap. I couldn't get any channels with the included antenna, and i live in an area which in general gets good reception/signal strength. the software it comes with altho works isnt that great, leaves more to be desired.

Other: overall, for the $30 don't hesitate, its a great buy, and for what it does, i think its worth it. Just make sure to use a better antenna.

  • Very cool item!

Pros: Wow, for the price this thing works great! I bought this to be able to watch ATSC TV on my netbook and it workes perfect. I am running it on Windows XP. The drivers installed fine but I was surprised that the utilities needed an activation key! I used the one that was in the little screencapture in the document for dufangyuan. This tuner picks up the channels better than my HDTV with a big antenna. I haven't tried QAM as I have satellite TV rather than cable TV but I suspect it will work well too.

Cons: There was no mention of the IR remote not working, I thought it was broken until I read the other review (I would not have returned it even if the remote was broken). I spent a few minutes trying to figure out where on the tuner dongle the IR receiver was, now I know, there isn't one. Hmm does DX sell an IR dongle, I will have to look. The activation key was a bit of a surprise. Neither of these is not really a con but maybe better documentation concerning the remote and maybe a blurb stating that you must use that persons key to activate.

Other: If you want to watch HD TV "over the air" this is a great little item to get.

  • Works great in Win7 WMC

posted by JackNF on 11:26:43 G3T 12/03/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Plugged it in and Windows 7 detected and set it up automatically, no need to even insert the driver disc that came with it. Works perfectly for tuning in ClearQAM digital stations in Windows Media Cente. Taking me ~20-25 minutes to do a full QAM channel scan. I haven't tested over-the-air ATSC digital tuning yet (no broadcasts in my area at present, and there won't be till Canada's over-the-air digital transition next year), but if QAM is working then ATSC should work as well I assume.

Cons: The remote that came with it is pretty much useless. It's an IR remote, but they haven't included an IR receiver to pair it with, and if you've already got a USB IR receiver then you've probably already got a (better) remote. The driver disc is a burned Mini-CDR that isn't even labeled. The included paper documentation detailing the software installation, while well made, instructs you to disable anti-virus software during the installation. I'm not saying that there's anything's wrong going on there, but those two things together just seems to me sketchy enough to make me glad I didn't need to put that disc in my computer to get things working. that's something you might want to consider if you're using an older version of Windows.

Other: If you're looking for a cheap digital tuner that works fine with Windows 7 and Windows Media Centre, THIS IS IT. I've got an ATI dual-tuner that I can't use QAM tuning with in WMC, and a VistaView dual tuner that gets unstable if I try to use both the analog and digital tuners simultaneously. This little USB tuner is the perfect compliment to let me use both of the analog tuners on those cards reliably while still getting my ClearQAM digital stations. I might just order in a second one at this price. One note for fellow Canadians looking to use this with WMC, you'll need to do a little prep-work to get digital tuning working at all in Madia Centre. For some reason Microsoft seems to deign Canada an analog-only region and wont enable digital tuners in WMC if you're up here in the great white north. You'll need to tweak things a little to get it working: http://tinyurl.com/mvz8go
