  • Good DIY kit for bulb upto 3W

posted by Rusdy on 20:58:17 G6T 28/06/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - the only DIY bulb kit that I can find to date with decent heatsink

Cons: - Sharp edges on heatsink (not really a concern)
    - Really tight space for driver -> limited choice on driver, SKU13552 is best for this

    Other: Dear DX,
Please provide another DIY bulb kit, like the one used in SKU57085, that'll be awesome.
    Tha,
    Your faithful customer

  • Easy, convenient way to make bulbs

posted by hatallica on 11:58:56 G5T 22/05/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: * Size - fits into light fixtures better than many CFL bulbs.
    * Convenience - Easily fits 20mm stars. Requires no tools, except soldering iron to solder your driver to your star.
    * Customized - add pretty much any emitter of any color and drive it with anywhere from 300mA to 1.2A.
    * Fit and Finish - the end result looks great.
    * Effective - Heatsink is very sufficient considering that the drivers that can fit are limited. Barely noticeable warmth when touched.

Cons: The AC connection is made through a pressure fit only. It seems to be effective and simple, but it is the only thing that makes this seem cheap.

Other: The reviews for most of the LED bulbs sold on DX indicate short lifetimes, so I decided to build my own. Excellent kit.

  • E27 Bulb Kit

posted by interspec on 22:26:54 G1T 03/01/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Not a bad little kit it has a few flaws in the aluminum molding that can be filed out and smoothed to allow better fitment, pretty simple to assemble even for less knowledgeable users,

Cons: DOES NOT MEET ANY ELECTRICAL STANDARD Be warned these cannot be used in Canada or Europe or USA legally if you have a fire these are not CE or another standard and insurance company's will not pay out if you have been using them so be warned. if you dont care about loosing your home then there great little bulbs only had one go on fire out of the 20 i bought :-)

Other: cheap and dangerous like most DX products

  • E27 DIY LED Light Bulb Casing

posted by andyka on 02:27:06 G12T 05/12/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: + good heat removing with sku 44988 and power in 2.42 W temperature was about 54 degrees C and with power in 4.5W temperature was 70 degrees C during 10 hours of operation. + not bad building quality, except thread in top ring - at my mind a little bit difficult to fit in the beginning. + star coming with DIY

Cons: - the lens was scratched when arrive inside and a little outside - it gives only narrow beam

Other: It'll be good to end cooling ribs a little ribs a little bit lower then the end of lens and to make a wide angle of light. At all it's very good and simple DIY as for handmade.

  • base for a LED headlamp

    posted by pedh67 on 08:02:31 G9T 21/09/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - perfect base for a headlamp.
    - with a Cree XR-E R2 mounted it never gets more than luke warm.

Cons: - not water proof, but that's not expected from a bulb kit.
    - threads and holes on the bottom pill are not of the best quality. Not a problem on mine but it might be on other

Other: very good product for the money.
Would probobly buy more to use as light bulbs at home also.

  • Great DIY Mains Powered LED Lamp Housing

posted by lyonn on 23:52:35 G7T 07/07/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - a great host for 220VAC powered DIY LED lamps
    - provides adequate heatsink for power LED emitters
    - easy to assemble and use
    - allows solderless AC line connection of the LED driver
    - comes with all the materials that you would need to build an LED spot light housing and spare screws
    - build quality is acceptable

Cons: - price could be lower
    - the threads for the lens retainer are a bit loose
    - there are no mounting holes or screws for the star
    - edges are a bit sharp
    - doesn't allow option to build a wide angle/flood lamp

Other: I would recommend this product for DIY mains powered LED lamp projects.

  • Better than it looks on the photos

posted by ICanuwundra on 08:38:27 G11T 11/11/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: : + solder free connection to mains side + unpopulated 21 mm star included + cooling ribs for keeping LED temperature low + drivers such as sku.13552 fit perfectly + compact, much smaller than a CFL bulb + black/silver fins look pretty hi-tech when screwed into socket

Cons: : - sharp burrs at cooling ribs - I had wished for a duroplast isolation between E27 thread and the hot contact tip.

Other: If you are unsatisfied with the choice of LED bulbs available, because of brightness or light temperatur (colour) concerns, this is an exellent host to assemble your own: Just add driver and a 21 mm star mounted power LED (for ease), or solder a LED of your choice to the included star. The result will be a bright, energy efficient light for a very competitive price.

  • COOLEST thing EVER!

posted by pinkytube on 07:26:57 G10T 08/10/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This is the GREATEST! I made myself a home bulb, and its at least 3x brighter than the 48 led's they sell here. I used a the small 1w driver, and epoxy'd it into the base, and the wires really install easy on this base without even soldering! The holes are there and the wires are held in my pressure. I applied thermal grease onto the cree I bought, soldered it on, and VOILA!

Cons: Its hard to solder the wires on the cree because this is such a good heat sink it's pretty hard to get the solder to melt to take the wire. But thats ok!

Other: I just ordered more, I want to make a lot more for my home since these should last 20000+ hours.

  • Easy to use

posted by ecotack on 18:43:06 G9T 25/09/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Fantastic little enclosure. Easy to fit LED on 20mm Star. Plenty of heat sinking from the aluminium pill and head. Everything you need except LED and driver (even included a 20mm star circuit board). Suitable for Seoul/Luxeon style LEDs

Cons: None with the product, but could do with a SES and BC version.

Other: $5.16 for housing $4.15 for Seoul P4 LED $3.23 for 3W Driver $12.54 total cost $14.10 for similar ready made $1.56 Saving ;o)

  • Good host for 21mm Star

posted by KentS on 05:51:31 G1T 27/01/2009 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: Easy to mount star.
Perfect heat sink: With thermal glue on the star and thermal grease on all threads, thermal management is excellent. I use two of these for a bike light. With the airflow around the fins I am pretty sure that this heat sink could handle even an ssc p7 or CREE MC-E.
All-round size: all 35mm optics I've tried fit. I use the supplied one and sku.4544. The supplied optics is about 20 degrees.

Cons: Not watertight (but it's supposed to be used as a light bulb, so that is to be expected).
All drilled holes for attaching the base of the bulb were not equally sized.

Other: Very versatile sku. A very good buy, I will get more.
