  • Decent module with limitations

    posted by account1234 on 17:49:36 G9T 28/09/2012 certificated customer

Pros: Good price. Cree XP-G emitter. The three modules I own have a very good tint. The low mode is quite low and should provide very good battery life, but I've not tested that.

Cons: These are advertised as 18V modules, but appear to be 6V max. The three I have do not function properly at 9V, but work fine at 6V. At 9V they heat up rapidly and the modes do not function well.

Other: Buy it, but don't power it with more than 2xCR123a's.

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Good price for a five mode, XP-G, P60 module. The medium and low modes are very useful for extended battery life. This module uses an efficient driver since it is 18V rated.

Cons: Mine only does three modes: high, strobe and SOS. High mode is very bright and generates a lot of heat. It seems like the driver is pushing too much current through the LED as it is brighter than the 320 lumen single mode module. My module also doesn't work in a Surefire body without the extra spacer spring.

Other: Not sure as mine doesn't work right.

Pros: This is BRIGHT. The spot is as bright (but bigger) than the XR-E R2 drop-in module that comes inside the single mode UltraFire WF-501B, and the spill is a bit brighter.
This one does have mode memory.
The mid mode is pretty low and the low mode is REALLY low. This is a pro for me since these modes are usefull for saving battery and reading maps or books and so.

Cons: The fast strobe mode is anything but fast. Just 4.9Hz.
The SOS mode is waaaaaay too slow. The whole word lasts 21 seconds!!!
The current draw in high mode is very high... The module is bright because of this but not so good for the emitter.

Other: Nice module but I have some concerns about heat dissipation due to the high current draw to such a small emitter.

  • Nice, bright drop-in

Pros: This is a great little upgrade for my standard Wf-501b flashlight, along with other flashlights that take p60 drop-ins. The pros are:
    1. It is bright.
    2. It's easy to use.
    3. It's aluminum. In a world of plastic reflectors, this one's a godsend.
    4. It's got a nice, smooth hotspot.

    Cons: The cons are:
    1. I expected the strobe mode to be faster. It's acceptable, but certainly not the attention-catching flash that I'm used to.
    2. For some reason, my drop in starts on SOS mode. Every. Single. Time. It annoys me, but I can live with it. I'm not sure if I've just got a fluke, but its something you might want to be weary of.
    3. Talking about SOS mode- it's useless. No, I'm not one of those people that don't like extra modes. I'm all for it. The thing is, this isn't SOS. It's unbearably slow, and just a series of random blips. Come to think of, I've been watching it for a while, and it looks like SMOLRUUW, but I can't be sure.

Other: It works (although a bit strangely). It's brighter than my starter p60. (I think it was a Q3?) It's easy to use and doesn't require technical knowledge. What more can I say? It has drawbacks, but I'm satisfied.

Pros: - very bright. Can't judge if really 320lm but it outlights even my P7/MC-E lights - memory actually works - decent build quality

Cons: - SOS mode does not work. it blinks 3 times then shines permanently - low mode flickers when driven with 2x 18650 or CR123

Other: Great upgrade for all p60 hosts if you can deal with the cons. Still strongly recommended!

Pros: Very Bright, brighter than 3xp4's i have. Inbuilt driver circuit does it's job. Good run-times on 4xAA's.

Cons: Does get really hot on High mode, uncomfortable to touch. LED was not soldered to board properly and became extremely dim after afew months, this was fixed by pushing in LED with finger on die an moving it till it was bright, hope this doesn't need to be reflow fixed if it happens again. Useless strobe and SOS modes. Price could come down alittle :P

Other: Great, perfect all-in-one for diy light, just plug into approximate suitable voltage and your done. Even with QC issues, i would recommend this to others.

Pros: 1) R5 LED means good light power 2) Memory option is very useful when you need this on you bike for example 3) Price is reasonable for complete drop-in module (LED + integrated circuit board + reflector) 4) low heating

Cons: Overall quality. Maybe I was unlucky and my particular copy was of such quality, but poor soldering and dead components in one device... The first thing that had to do it attributed to the repair. And to give almost half the price for the repairs.

Other: After returning from the repair I'm satisfied. Light virtually identical to the P7 diode average power, but heats it considerably less. 2600 mAh battery is almost enough for 2 hours at maximum capacity. For the bike light this is a good flashlight, which is also possible to take anywhere.

Pros: Very bright lightsource, the brightest small one for sunfirehousing.
That it emits about the same as the R2, I have to disagree strongly. That de thow is less in NOT correct, the emitter needs to be turned back for about a half turn and than the throw is as narrow as wirh the R2, but with much more power.

Cons: Have bought 3 in one time, one emitter is out of center but slightly, no real problem.

Other: A very interresting emitter for inventors, designers and modding.
It dissipates less heat compaired with the same amount of light from the R2, wich was my favorite untill now.

  • Money well spent on this drop in

Pros: Standard drop in for P60 host. I have many lights from DX. The main reason I get all these lights just because they are very affordable! I read and did so much research on lights lately just want to find out how far LED technology has gone. After extensive search and comparison, finally I found the best. Look no further.

Cons: Currently R5 is the most efficient LED available for drop in. That may be the reason this light doesn't heat up or may be the reflector doesn't dissipate heat from the LED.
I just worried if poor heat dissipation will kill/shortern the LED life.

Other: If you own a P60 host this will be the best drop in at this price. If don't have P60 host, don't worry, there are couple P60 hosts at reasonable price. I suggest you get sku:14885 charger, sku:20392 18650 battery, sku:16240 P60 host for 43bucks.

  • Best Choice for Bike Lights

    posted by chris2002rock2 on 00:50:08 G6T 03/06/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: If you are browsing this drop-in, you know it's the brightest available in its class. After comparing to P7 C and D-bins, this drop-in matches performance at 1A what the P7s throw at 2A.
With both lights operating (at the above rates), the area one expects to have lit by vehicle headlights is lit perfectly by this module. The P7 does fill in the sides much better, and on a bike they really complement one another.
However, given the heat and charge cycle issues from running the P7 at 2A means that in reality, the P7 can't operate for as long as many poeple will need the light. I did a sag test with http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.19624 cells and got 2:15 till it switched automatically to strobe mode.
In this host: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16241 heat dissipation was fine, though 1A is not difficult to deal with.

Cons: There really are no pitfalls to this SKU. The light pulls 1A at any voltage up to 8.2 (where I ended my tests), and starts to drop slightly when the cell sags to ~3.7, though not that bad. I'll run it again and get more data on late sag.
The only way to improve this would be a boost mode added, but at this price, come on!
This light has no cons unless you refuse to pay its price. That is your call.

Other: If you have any qualms about a P7 or similar emitter, you absolutely should get this instead. There are going to be so many people with buyer's remorse who get the P7s not knowing its caveats.
If you recommend a light / emitter for high power in a compact (single 18650 cell) light for a newb, it's really best to point to this.
let the user decide to get the P7 only when they understand the qualifiers. I think it's a mistake to hype the P7s when the same performance is available with less power consumption, and the power consumption on small lights can be a deal breaker, not to mention a heart-breaker when your fancy light melts.
