  • It's not what I expected

Pros: Reasonable quality and good price. There's no drivers need, because it autommatically install it

Cons: There's not what I expected. I thought that PC System will recognize it as "LPT2 Parallel port", but it's seen as "Printers compatibility". I usually works with CNC machines, exchanging data through the LPT parallel port, but Laptops has not this data port. I thought that this adapter would be like another parallel port, but it doesn't. I've been trying to find more information about hardware, but supplier's website doesn't provide additional data. An appropriated driver for make an virtual LPT2 port has not been posible to find neither.

Other: I will keep on making test; perhaps making a communication way via serial port can do it work.

Pros: I have an old HP printer with LPT port only, but my laptop does not support it, so this cable is very useful in this case. It works fine BUT for printing only, it`s cheap, and quality is better than I expected ( regarding of the price :).

Cons: Does not support scanning, but .... whatever.

    Other: Works, what else !

  • Only for Printer,Scanner

Pros: I have a new generation LapTop with no parralel port integrated and this cable saves me a lot. I have two HP laser printer which is old but they do work.

Cons: Cable is only for printer / scaner use. Noting all. A have a CNC machine, build by me from scratch, and have a controler that runs motors and all other stuff. Controler used a parralel port for connection with computer. A went to service after two days trying to run machine from my laptop using this cable. In service they told me that some chip is missing on that little cable board. So cable is useless for that. And it's only designed for Printers and Scanners.

Other: If you have a newly desk computer / laptop and an old scanner or printer this is cable designed for you.

Pros: I have been using a HP Laserjet printer via the LPT port for many years now (the old, bulky machine won't die! not that I need much else besides), and after my last PC system upgrade, at last I have gotten past the point where serial and parallel ports are mandatory in the back of my PC case. So, should I ditch a working printer and spend good money on a new, USB-driven one? No, sir. All I need is a USB-to-parallel adapter which allows me to keep using the old, bulky beast. Hence, this little device. It comes in a small box, along with a mini-CD packed with drivers and manuals. To my delight none of that was needed, as Windows XP just recognised the device straight up and allowed me to set up my old printer as a USB printer. It won't let my computer recognise my printer automatically, the way it would recognise a USB printer, but then, I think that's not possible, due to the limitations of the LPT port, not the adapter's. I expect Windows 7 to work just as well with it, should I need to install my old printer in my newest PC. I still haven't tested it under Ubuntu.

Cons: Packaging could have been better. The mini-CD came with no protection at all, and it shows a few scratches on the surface. Not that I seem to need it, anyway. The CD contents are a bit confusing. There is no installation wizard, just a handful of folders full of manuals and drivers, in English and Chinese. Unexperienced users may find it difficult to sort out what makes what. But, as I said before, for most users there will be no need of the CD at all. Cable is a bit short, but, combined with the LPT printer cable, that's little to worry about.

Other: Pros: - Plug and Play usability (under Windows XP at least) - Works! What else? - Cheap (in the good sense). Cons: - Packaging could be better. - Confusing driver CD (but then, very few people will actually need it). I'm happy with my purchase. My old parallel port printer just got a bit of lease of life. I would recommend this device to anyone who needs/wants to be able to keep using an old parallel port printer.

  • USB Printing Support for LPT Printers

posted by GrAnd on 10:13:18 G10T 23/10/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Adds USB printing support for LPT printers.
    No external power required.
Can be connected to any LPT printer with non-centronics ports using manufacturer supplied cable (i.e. HP LaserJet 1100).

Cons: I've found it difficult to make this device work. When I insert this adapter to USB port Windows just reports about "Unknown device" and does not recognize a printer connected. I tried 3 different machines - no luck.
Then I inserted the device to my network router (Asus 500gP) - it recognized my printer correctly, but the printing does not work for some reasons.
Then I tried to connect it through D-Link USB-hub. The adapter finally works, but only if the hub is powered with external power supply, otherwise I see the similar behavior as connecting to motherboard's USB ports (the only difference is that the "USB Printing Support" instead of "Unknown" device is detected, but not functioned). It looks like the amount of power provided bu USB ports is not enough for powering the device (in the same time the device properties tab claims that the device requested 96mA only).
    Other disappointments:
It does not supports USB 2.0 High speed.
The cable length is only 0.9m, not 1.5m as claimed.

Other: If your PC does not have LPT connector you can use this adapter to connect your old-fashioned printer. But be aware of the difficulties you can faced.

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: First of all this is a plug and play device so you don't need to do anything, just insert the USB plug and windows will recognize it immediately. The devise shoes as "USB printing support"

Cons: I bought this cable because me new computer doesn't have a parallel port and i needed one to use my AVR micro controller programmer and also the XILINX JTAG cable to program FPGA and CPLD.
Unfortunately this is not showing as a LPT port and can't work with the above cables.

Other: buy it only if you have a parallel printer or else go for a PCI parallel port which works fine with the programming cables for electronic devices
