  • Good LEDs for storage lighting

posted by Plutohunden on 11:20:09 G1T 07/01/2013 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Two 5W LEDs in series (6,5V+6,5V=13V), which makses it suitable for connection to a 12V lead battery, which is kept at little above 13Volts with continuous charging. I have used several pairs of these for getting light into a storage room. Use of pairs of 5W LEDS instead of 10W LEDs give better spread of the light. Connect to aluminium blocks for cooling.

Cons: The connecting pads could be at some more distance from the screw locations in order not to need insulated screws.

Other: Good and powerful LEDs. Price acceptable; however the 10W LEDs from DealExtreme give even more light for the money.

  • Low-priced LED emitter with decent efficiency

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -Good quality on all the ones I've gotten(~10) -Quite powerful, don't look into it even without lens .. It'll hurt your eyes. -Double pads for positive and negative terminals makes for easy wire-routing in more advanced setups. -Most lenses/reflectors seems to fit this emitter quite good, my personal favorite would be SKU.4626 which is more or less bolt-on and gives a good spread combined with this emitter.

Cons: -Unusual voltage(6.6V) makes it hard to get an acceptable level when you're hooking these up in series or parallel configurations without buck/boost circuits -Can get quite hot, make sure you use a good heatsink and thermalpaste! -Can be a bit of a bother to get it mounted proper due to the star design, but no biggie and not a flaw of the product itself I guess.

Other: Overall a powerful but slightly hot 'power-LED', preferably used with a buck/boost setup as the voltage is a bit off if you want to use a resistor. For this price it's hard to beat!

Pros: Cheap Very Bright (Even running them well short of 5W) Easy to use

Cons: Nothing really Have patience while soldering, with the star it takes a little time to get hot. Also be careful because the heating of the star can cause the solder that holds the LEDs can get soft. Almost a pro actually due to good heat dissipation

Other: If you're in the market for high powered LEDs don't think just buy these. They say 5W but but you can run them much lower than that and still get exceptional brightness.

  • Great Product, Insanly bright

    posted by steve000 on 04:39:24 G5T 20/05/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: The LED's themselves are very bright. I have found the following.
Soldering to them is weird, using a 18w soldering iron, the solder would take a while to melt, then when it would melt and stick to the pad it would cool for a sec. I imagine this is because of the heatsink star they are attached to. no big deal.
Run these at 6.5v they draw 500mA or 3.25 watt. I believe these are 5w LED's. There is minimal brightness difference between 500mA and 750mA (5.1watt). These ran at 9w almost 1.5amp but no extra brightness so not worth burning them out.

    Cons: None. great product

    Other: bang on product

Pros: As noted in another review(s), it gives off a lot of light for it's size. I got it in October of 2010 but finally now got around to setting it up. I hope I was sent the right one. All the heat discussed in one or more other reviews is no longer a problem and I can safely touch it after it's been on for 20 minutes. Also there is no longer any pee-colored light. The light is a very cool (versus warm white) white, more like a fluorescent light but with a big more blue. It is about 70% as bright as the 18 watt 110 volt CFL light I normally use in a particular location. I used a 1/2 ohm 5 watt resister I got at radio shack ($2.00) and the power source is noted below. I have ordered 5 more and look forward to adapting a six volt rectangular flashlight to power at least 2 of these in parallel if possible. That should be a great bike light or flashlight. I hope they work connected in parallel okay. Heck, 5 of these shining at 5 watts each and still at 6 volts! I hope it works! The power source is a 110 volt to 5.7 volt cell phone adapter cord. I cut the cord's end off and then soldered the two ends of the 5.7 volt adapter to one of the positive and negatives poles of the LED (as it has two of each.) Price is great and so far the quality is great. 80-100 watt worth of these and I am thinking your whole house's interior is lite up but some might not like to read to this light.

Cons: DON'T LOOK RIGHT AT IT. IT IS A VERY CONCENTRATED BRIGHT LIGHT. It doesn't act in various major ways like the earlier reviews of it but it does physically look like its picture. Again I hope I wasn't sent the wrong one but it is a 5 watt LED and looks like it's picture so I am assuming it is the right one. I have ordered more and can't wait to get them.

    Other: Great product!

  • Awesome 5W LED Emitter on Star

posted by bigbounderrv on 15:45:18 G3T 30/03/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: This 5W LED Emitter is better than I figured it would be.
I have a tactical flashlight that had a 7 watt led on a star, it lasted less than a week ( think I put the batteries in backwards)
(which I think was a Q5 being over driven with 7.2 vdc)
I have to say it is almost as bright. I put a 12~24 VDC/AC 3.4VDC out driver. which has a full bridge rectifier so I don't have to worry about the polarity of the batteries they can go in either way.

Cons: When you apply voltage to this little baby, it gets hot right now, so make sure you mount it to a good heat sink with sink compound.

Other: Bottomline: it's a very reasonably priced replacement/upgrade, for any lighting project.

**remember to mount it to a heat sink**

  • Lots of Lumen!

posted by Poetman on 03:57:54 G1T 21/01/2011 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: Good bright LED for DIY projects. -Bright -Allmost the brightness of 2 x Q5! -Good value

Cons: Should come as bare LED. Because when you want to make a multiple LED flashlight you need to get the led of the star. I made a flashlight with 3 of these LEDS inside. Very bright but also very floody. And I cant seem to get it focused with OP reflectors or SMO reflectors. Finally I used SKU 51593 remover the 3 x 1 watt leds inside and changed them with these 3 x 5 watt leds.

Other: Good modding LEDS! Cheap price for LEDS emitting more than aprox 400 lumen.

  • Really good led

posted by Mirkovich on 00:04:48 G10T 21/10/2010 certificated customer

Pros: Excellent item. Bought three, all work and they've almost left me blind.

Cons: They're too warm. Even with thermal compound and a good aluminium disipation plate. I think maybe 50-60 Celcius degrees.

Other: Reallu, 2S2P isn't the best way to wire them. If i use a constant current driver, as one cell dies, it will kill the other (will get twice the amount of current).

  • Secret Edixeon 4-die love child? Watch out P7/MCE!

posted by desolder on 17:59:54 G8T 07/08/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: WOW this thing is BRIGHT. I have driven it up to 1A(~7W), and it rivals P7/MCE brightness at the same power levels. However, I don't know if it can handle 1A for extended periods.
You can clearly see four dies beneath the phosphors. They're wired 2S2P, which is a great way to wire them since many drivers have better efficiency at higher output voltage.
Biggest pro is PRICE. Under 5 bucks for a 4-die LED that's almost as good as a P7/MCE! That's a screaming deal.

Cons: Where's the darn datasheet??? It's obviously an Edixeon LED, but there's no mention of it on the Edison Opto web page.
The tint outside the spot is yellow-green, kinda like PEE :). It's the same effect I got from the Edison KLC8 which I bought earlier from DX. OP reflectors or frosted lenses help a little bit, but if you need pure white, then this won't be a good option.
The LED slug is not soldered to the star. This is a con since it means higher thermal resistance. However, some people consider this a pro since it's much easier to remove the LED for custom mounts.

Other: If you don't mind the yellow-green tint, this will flood your world with light for CHEAP.

  • got me suprised

posted by inatel on 16:33:15 G7T 11/07/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: It is brigth as a 15W fluorescent lamp, yes I have said 15W fluorescent lamp (~800 lumens) Actually i guess its is around 450 lumens but with a angle ~170 degrees , so you can buy it and replace your 15W fluorescent.
The price is very cheap if you compare it to other leds...
I also have ordered sku.37243 and I do confirm that this led is brighter than sku.37243 which is 3 times more expensive than this little led star,

    Cons: none

Other: I buy one to try , and it really got me suprised forcing me to order anothers 10 pieces
