  • Small and handy LED driver

    posted by Signaller86 on 05:44:12 G1T 25/01/2013 certificated customer

Pros: This driver is very convenient and easy to use. Having soldering skills you can customize it for LEDs with different currents (by changing the resistor R2).

Cons: All elements works in extreme conditions , so it is not recommended use it on maximum current. Also on pcb are missing some input and output capacitors recommended in the datasheet. But for weak LEDs is not critical.

Other: Driver keeps stable brightness LEDs with different voltage levels. So this drivers is very useful for upgrading flashlights.

Pros: These are a steal! four drivers for under 7 dollars...you can't beat that. I haven't used any of these yet, but have a friend who has and recommended them to me so i stocked up while they were available. That's less than two dollars per driver. nice!

Cons: can't think of any cons yet, other than the fact that the wire leads coming off of the boards are a little thin. I'm sure they will work just fine, but I will probably replace it with some thicker wire before using them.

Other: Buy these! They're cheap and good drivers. You can't beat DX's prices anywhere!

  • A friendly little driver for Cree XR-E and more.

posted by Machete on 00:16:13 G1T 10/01/2012 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: They work, have proper efficiency and come to a fair price. The simple layout makes it easy to tweak the driver for your specific application. There is Gold plating on the battery terminals, which helps your light to work flawless. It fits lots of Flashlight shells and modules sold on dx. The small size makes you want to integrate them into all kinds of stuff.

Cons: Out of the box the current is slightly too high for warm white XR-E emitters, which are rated for 700mA maximum current. The markings on the IC are sanded away, which makes it hard to tell if the manufacturer changed the design, unless you test it. At last there is some filing or sanding necessary to fit it into a driver pill. But I wouldn't want to pay more fore someone else fidgeting with it.

Other: It's always good to have some of these ready when you get some ideas. It's a quick and cheap way to get some work done. You only need basic tools and knowledge. And may be a bunch of Schottky Dioden.

  • A good value

Pros: 17mm useful size. Decent buck driver probably utilizing ax2002 IC (its etched out, but appears similar to others I have at least in package size) Leads already attached.

Cons: D1 is running near maximum rating. Prefer a 2:1 safety factor.

Other: If it proves to hold up over time I will buy more of these.

  • Modifications for different output currents

posted by royfellows on 08:18:59 G8T 06/08/2010 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: One of the best and most versatile drivers on the Internet.
By changing the resistors R5 and R1 (requires expert soldering skills) the outputs can be changed, such as 1.46 amps output for max drive on R5 XPG.
Beware design changes on diffeent batches, but here is guide for current issue.
    R5 = 0.47 ohms, R1 = 0.47 ohms, output = 1050 mA
    R5 = 0.47 ohms, R1 = None, output = 550 mA
    R5 =0.47 Ohms, R1 = 0.27 ohms, output = 1460 mA
This driver will also drive 2 emitters in series and only runs about 6 degrees C hotter, but recommend heatsinking.

Cons: Specifications prone to change time to time.

Other: One of the best and most useful

  • B2eze

    posted by B2eze on 20:39:06 G12T 07/12/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: -Good performance, easy to solder and since the leads are soldered upon receipt, easy to verify correct wiring! Although I replace the tiny leads with 22 ga. teflon stranded wire. I guess I have used at least 2 dozen in 3 X and 4 X "D" alkaline cell maglite mods driving one Cree XR-E Q5 per board in groups or 3 or 4 LEDs on a 5/16" (8 mm) round disk, snug fit, Artic silvered heatsink with no problems. However.......

Cons: When I try to drive the same Q5s over 6 volts with these boards (ie. 5 or 6 "D" cells alkaline power) with the same set up and heatsink I am getting 1 of 3 or 1 or 4 board burnout rate! As I said, these boards have performed 100% at 6 volts and under and since they are rated for 9 volts, I should expect the same reliability in a 5 or 6 "D" alkaline maglite mod as a 3 or 4 "D" use. Anyone else have a problem at higher voltages? Can anyone suggest a more robust board?

Other: Well performing board for 6 volt and under applications. I will continue to order and use these boards for their reasonable and LED friendly (800ma) output, dependability and ease of use. However their weakness in handling voltages above 6 volts has both embarrassed me and cost me money and lost respect from my customers and friends.

  • Super value for money

posted by kangoeroes on 14:50:01 G12T 05/12/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

    Pros: 1. Great price
    2. Build quality is good enough
    3. Very compact
    4. Does what it is made for: to drive a LED with constant current instead of constant voltage + resistor (draw your batteries empty and save money instead of throwing them away half full)

Cons: 1. Output current not adjustable
    2. Very thin leads
    3. No documentation (however, not difficult to find)

Other: Great value for money. Why not offer a board with an empty R1 space?

  • works

posted by fishmarket on 21:16:07 G11T 01/11/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: cheap, easy to use, fit various installation position well (i used it for flash light and table light, still experimenting it with counter top light). It works well with SKU 1445 (SSC P4 Z-LED).

Cons: order took so long (more than two months). Solding jobs on those SMDs are pretty poor. However the circuit is so simple, with such poor workmanship, it still works well.

Other: If you don't mind long waiting and working device even though the workmanship is poor, this is pretty good deal. Especially good for experiments. Saw couple comments talking about no open protection, i haven't gotten chance to verify it whether it would blow out the LED or not.

Pros: Exactly what i was looking for,
    great for custom builds /upgrades
Does exactly what it says on the tin give or take a few percent (they do not come in a tin but all clattering about in deal extremes lovely red "don't panic" bubble wrap)

Cons: none! nada! zip! zero! zilch! not one! okay maybe one... flimsy wires but they'll do :p

Other: buy it, build it, save yourself some $$$$

posted by isotco on 13:09:14 G9T 20/09/2008 certificated customer

Involvement Level: Expert (understands the inner workings)

Pros: - Nice single mode regulator for one to two Li-Ion batteries or two primary cells.
    - Easy to install and it's diameter is 16 mm so it will fit in most flashlight pills.

Cons: - The included wires is very thin.

Other: Very good value, very good driver.
