usb gps receiver Customers Reviews

  • Works very well under Windows and Linux

+ Works under Windows 7 x64. I had to download the driver from the Prolific site)
+ Works under Linux. I tested on Debian Squeeze 32 bit. No need to download drivers, the ones that come with the kernel work.
    + Seems very acurate.
    + Update ever 1 second.
+ Has a LED that blinks while tracking and stays on when locked.
+ Comes with a short usb cord.
    + Good construction
+ Serial connection works with a big number of applications
I bought the GPS to be used while sailing. I tried it with the following programs, and works very well:
+ Seaclear: under Win 7 and Debian using Wine
+ OpenCPN: under Win 7 and Debian
The GPS fits my needs and it's much cheaper that buying a stand-alone GPS unit.
I have not tried it on the road. So I can't tell how does it work while driving.
Very good GPS to be used with a laptop. I recommend considering this product before buying an stand alone GPS.
  • A good quality name brand product

Made by one of the names in the field this is a well designed product which works out of the box. Go to the holux.com site and download the right drivers before installing. The same site also has the complete users manual. Works well with OziExplorer software. For testing the utility package from the Houlx site gives you lat/long etc.
The packaging is solid and has a good professional feel.
    A good buy- recommended.

Connected it directly to my Acer Aspire One, it did not receive any signal; with the short extension, it did not work either but when I added the 2 m length of USB extension, it worked ok - it is then susceptible toRF interference , specially since I have the VGA cable hooked-on - After it connected, 9 satellites were received when the unit was taken away from the netbook, in the open. To test further, I brought the unit close in to the Acer, the number of satelites rapidly went down to nothing.
    also works with Linux Ubuntu
It is a good and sturdy unit for the price
  • Seems to work fine, but with at least one bug.

Low price, well made, sensitive receiver, works under tree canopy. Very accurate positions since unit is WAAS enabled (within 20’ under tree canopy and at base of 50’ high hills on two sides). Most useful for finding Lat/Lon and elevation of current position. LiPo battery seems to hold charge well. Works as expected except as noted.
Would be nice if it was able to output NMEA sentences at mini USB port, but it doesn't seem to do so. Would rather have a slightly larger unit that used common AAA batteries since charging on long hikes would be a problem.
Does everything I hoped it would.
