  • Great USB card

    - Plug and play
    - A very cheap way to get more USB slots on your old computer
    - Works perfect
    - You dont have to be an expert to install it
Very easy to use. To install it just open the chassis cover, insert it into a free PCI slot, put the chassis cover back on and you are done. My version of XP found it and installed the drivers automaticly. If you should need drivers there is a mini CD in the box with the drivers you need.
Its easy to install, its cheap and it is a very cheap way to upgrade your computer so you have more USB slots.
The card is very very cheap compared to the prices here in Norway.
  • When you need more USB ports...

Full speed USB 2.0, plug and play no drivers disc needed, 23" long power cable, slim design
I've tried this on two computers, an Averatech running XP and a Fujitsu t2010 running Win7. Both are plug and play, no need to shut down. The Averatech worked fine from the start, I was able to plug two flash drives at once but a removeable hard drive needed more power (which the supplied 23" cable provides). The Fujitsu, on the other hand, was able to install but the drives would not show up even though a notification popped up that they were connected. After cleaning the PC Card slot for dust and dirt everything worked fine, but would sometimes "die" again and drives would not appear like before. Removing and reinserting the PC Card makes it work again, but I suspect it has to do with conflicts than a faulty card. A drive connected to native USB ports in the Fujitsu would "blink" when I try to connect another drive to the PC Card in a "dead" state. In other words it's not the card.
If your cards suddenly "died" after it worked, try this: Right Click "My Computer", click "Device Manager", expand "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and find the two "USB Root Hub" with a "Location" from "VIA Rev 5". On the "Power Management" tab make sure "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked.

    Here come the obvious pro's:
    - Gives you USB2.0 on a laptop with USB1.1 (yes, the full USB2.0, not a tiny bit slower)
    - Works under Linux! It was known it would work with windows, but I tested it on Linux and it worked there as well. See Other Thoughts for more info.
    - Does not heat up after use, which happens to a lot of other USB-related hardware.
    - Provides a small cable to be able to use the power from your USB1.1 port
The system I tested this card on is Debian Lenny with a generic 2.6.26 kernel.
Drivers loaded by this card are: ohci_hcd , ehci_hcd and uhci_hcd.
The chipset used in this card is indeed a NEC chip as mentioned on the pictures.
If you have an (old) laptop without USB2.0 , and you cannot/don't want to afford a new one, buy this card.
  • Excelent way to expand your USB ports

Expands your USB ports using the PCMCIA (PCCARD) interface, that I have never seen someone using. Fits completely inside the computer, even looks like it was there for the whole time.
I do not have anything else to say, I am just filling this to reach the 500 characters quota.
    It is worth the price.

Works when you use previously suggested drivers.
    Matches description.
The website to get the correct drivers from is http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&Type=1
You select your operating system and browse through to find the previously suggested drivers.
Good card, would be better if the USB ports were orientated horizontally so that you could plug devices in without issues, otherwise a good product.
